Looks like the Freesound project passed a milestone this week, and got itself some notice at Slashdot into the bargain.
They've now got 10,000 samples under the creative commons license, free for people to download and use...

There have been other such sample sites which were closed down because some anonymous and ignorant people had submitted copyrighted material. I would use such a site a lot if I could be absolutely sure this would never happen - but I don't see how that can be possible....

i'm sure it's policed. why wouldn't you use it without assurance it won't go away? will you not dl vst's because the dev might go away?

no you misunderstood - I wouldn't use it because I could never be absolutely sure the material wasn't copyrighted....
