If you are interested in a career in the music business then come along to the Soma Skool for some Positive Education.

Scotland’s most successful dance label Soma Records, supported by West Dumbartonshire Council is bringing the last of the 2005 events to Clydebank Town Hall.

The aim of this initiative is to educate, entertain and encourage young people with an interest in the music business and give them an invaluable perception of the mechanics of the creative industries. This year the Soma Skool will take place on the 28th November from 11am-3pm.

Soma Records Director Richard Brown says “We came up with the idea of Soma Skool as a way to encourage young people to think about the music industry as a real career option. Understanding the different areas involved allows them to see that the music industry is about more than the artist and the record, there are lots of people who can make the final release possible and within that, lots of different career options.

We want people to see the vibrancy of the Scottish music industry and do our bit in making sure that it remains so by encouraging new talented people joining it in the future and to encourage them to be entrepreneurial themselves and start their own creative business. Its fantastic that Soma are able to bring the event to Clydebank.”

A brilliant daylong experience, which includes hands-on workshops, industry panels and Q&A sessions, the Soma Skool is really an excellent chance to get a taster of how the music industry operates. To date, the Soma Skool has been brought to some 2,500 school children, students and music enthusiasts across Scotland.

Contributors to the Clydebank event include Soma talent Alex Smoke, Peacock Visual Arts, Bulletproof Design, and Korg where they will demonstrate the use of cutting edge music software, computer animation and design to inform on the processes that go into releasing a piece of music.

Radio Magnetic will be demoing Internet Radio services and specialist record shop Rub A Dub will be exhibiting DJ hardware and conducting a workshop.

Throughout the day, seminars will look at other areas of the music industry. Topics covered will include, Law And Copyright, Journalism and Photography and Starting Up A Record Company on your own.

Stuart Cosgrove, Director of Channel 4 Nations & Regions said of the Soma Skool: “This is a great opportunity for young people to get a taste of the music industry, whether they want to be a journalist, a DJ, or a musician.”

With careers advice on hand from Business Gateway, Cultural Enterprise Office, Channel 4, HSBC, Careers Scotland, New Deal for Musicians and many more organisations, there will be an ideal opportunity to learn and introduce yourself to the leading players in the industry, get your foot in the door as well as learning how to go about setting up on your own.

This is the 6th Soma Skool event to take place and is supported by West Dumbartonshire Council. In 2006 a bigger event shall be hosted in Glasgow in the Spring.
