It's finally happened - a progression-based composition tool is now a VST host.

This should be good news to many (including myself).

I will be downloading this baby and having a look for myself.

composition tool
I use it daily to train and learn songs.

VST suppport is great yes but don't try to compare it with another host (i mean host like seqencer) or you will just find it limited. But if you want to practice, learn songs fast, sightreading, etc.
BIAB is just THE tool to have.

Post

Yup - I use it when I need quick-and-dirty backup track from fake books - for example when a keyboardist isn't available at church and I don't have time to learn it.

This would tell me to expect that PowerTracks Pro Audio will probably host VSTI next release as well.

If Power hosts VSTi's plays video tracks and renders audio in 64 bit, all for their low price.

Powertracks Pro Audio seems to be an easy-to-use sequencer. I'm so comfortable with FLS and Sonar (and getting there with P5V2) that I've not had reason to keep my copy current. It does have some nice features for integration with BIAB... but it will definitely make the "budget host" list as an alternative to, say, Cubase SE or Sonar Home Studio.

Hi,

I bought BIAB 2006 yestday and played it few hours without beeing able to run any vst. Does anybody succeeded ? What about latency fixing ?
Seems like some parameters lack to run it like a vst host, or what ?... any suggestions ?

Have you any DXi installed on your computer? (One suffice)
I ask this because there's a bug where if you don't have any DXi the plugin windows is deactivated and then you cannot load any VSTi.

If you don't have any DXi install the VSC DXi that comes with every purchase of BIAB.

If this is not the case (You know that you have one or more DXi installed) menu -> Opt. -> MIDI driver setup... -> Check the USE DXi Synth a plugin loader window appears and if not click on DXi synth settings... scroll down, the last entry is "Add VSTi plugin"
There you go.

Good news. Maybe price will come down on overpriced products.

BIAB overpriced produt ???

If you meaned about Powertracks, you can't really compare it to other seq. More expensive that is, but with Powertrack there's a lack of many "essential features" for tracking and mixing in there.

BIAB is a very usefull tool as many said above. Do not even think about using it as an alternative VST host to a sequencer like Sonar. It would be like using a car to drive in a nail. You will not be happy. I had Directizer, so in effect my BIAB has always been a VST host as well. It does not serve much of a purpose though. The only VSTs or DXIs I used in BIAB is the ones that support GM like Vsampler Cakewalk TTS or VSC. To do any usefull snth automation I export the midi and import it into Sonar where I can tweak to my heart's content. I use BIAB to create the midi sequences / loops etc only mainly for bass patterns and drum sequences / loops with breaks, chorusses etc.

Thank you Dramsenik, I will try this at home ASAP but I'm afraid it is going to bug again as I installed BIAB packed VSC dxi synth without success.
I must be wrong somewhere, and I will try again with your step explainations.

What about latency ? I tried the asio settings but no more results... looks like my sound card doesn't work with BIAB.

I was thinking of exporting midi tracks to use it in my vst host sequencer (Tracktion) but it's a bit frustrating and lot of pain ! Your opinion ?

Are you using the default midi sounds of the software ? Or do you have a tip to improve the quality of the instruments playing while composing ?

Can you manage to play your keyboard without latency ?

Any advices appreciated... from a Reunion Island neighbour newbie.

That's how I use BIAB - I build the parts in BIAB, save the MIDI file, and suck it into Sonar to tweak.

BIAB is great for the 'quick and dirty' backup track, or when you're stuck and you need some inspiration. IMHO if you're going to use it with something other than General MIDI, you're best to finish in a "real sequencer".

For the audience PowerTracks is reaching for (Band-in-a-Box users that want something to work with BIAB to enhance their songs) it's adequate. Cubase/Sonar/etc it's not.

dougsyo basically said it. Like him I build the basic track in BIAB using the VSC or the TTS GM synths. Sometimes when I build a guitar based song I load Vsampler, but only because the guitar presets in VSC really sounds poor.

Myself, I have never actually recorded directly in BIAB. I always export to Sonar where I do that. I like to build at least three different versions of a song. To make BIAB work for you best you have to use the F5 key (change setting at a bar) to change styles. Standard BIAB styles usually have an A and B style. For a different feel for the chorus I like to load up a complete new styule at the chorus. Even do 3 different song styles witht he same fakebook and save them all and then you can mix and match in Sonar.

I like to play my keayboard - but in Snar - but I'm not really so good at it. With BIAB you get the blues piano lessons on the CD which I worked through. So that is the only official training I got in playing piano. I played the keys in the band I had years ago, but that was the standard "press down the key with a pad sound" style only.
