Hi all!

Many people say that my songs need better drums. So can you tell me, which soundfonts contain the best drums (free or not, that doesn't matter)?

I'm not willed to buy any VSTi like BFD. That is too expensive and not handy.

Thanx for responding

Natural Studio's NS_Kit7Free comes as a soundfont. Probably the best free kit going.

I've produced SFZ format mappings of a number of kits that you might like to try, assuming you're using SFZ (and if not, you should be ;-)):

I give links to the sources for the samples.

I own FL Studio and I am using the SF-Player there...

Your mileage may vary but sfz is (a) free and (b) the best.

What program did you use to change the key mappings? I really would like to alter some of the soundfonts I have. I tried downloaded Vienna but it won't install on my system for some reason.

The orignal Vienna app by creative only works on systems with Creative cards.

There is a free Vienna clone called Viena, by the same guy who does Synthfont. Check it out.

Another vote for the NS_Kit. Here's a couple more SFs I think are pretty good and use alot.

Drums by Slavo located @ http://atlas.csbnet.se/livecenter/showp ... soundfonts Good kick & snare particularly. Toms are too dark IMHO. Oh yeah, the higher Crash is actually the lower crash choked. Haven't tried it yet but you might be able to use a SF editor (Vienna?) to create a high Crash & map it to an unused note value. BTW, spacefox, thanks for the tip on Viena - gotta link? I would assume, well, more like hope, one doesn't need a DamnBlaster to use it as in Creative's Vienna.

1105_Harris_Best_Drum_Set found @ http://www.homemusician.net. Oops, wait, their site seems to have had some trouble, at least right now, and won't open. Maybe they'll sort it out and come back up later. Hopefully.

Check out Sonic Implants' free SFs. The BlueJay Hats are another good half open hat and map to any MIDI channel. A real plus! Haven't tried it but the Cymbal roll is reputed to be way cool.

Or go the whole hog and get Sonic Implants' BlueJay Small Ambient 1 drums set. Despite owning the mother-of-all-drum-samplers, Battery 2, this soundfont is still my go-to drum set for acoustic drums (though converted to Battery format and with some percussion added). Really, that's how good it is! And it comes with a choice of 2 kicks and 4 snares...

NS_Kit7Free does sound fantastic, I find it doesn't work very well with more extreme compression and EQ settings. I would only use it for styles of music that would have much less compressed drum sounds, such as mellower rock music and jazz.

What are some awesome drum kits that sound great when heavily compressed and EQ'd are Ruffrider and Easyrider. I've found that if you program them well, you can get a very authentic sounding breakbeat. Add a little distortion on top of the EQ and compression, and these things have a quite aggressive sound that would suit harder breakbeat and industrial styles well.

Edit: forgot the link to easyrider and ruffrider...

Sonic Implants soundfonts are very nice, and if your mind's set on SF2 that's what I'd recommend. However, I'd really suggest getting Jamstix.
