not to confuse or insult, but the answer (of how to find a band name)is to come up with something original, a name that means something to you, that has some significance...i have a dumb band name if i ever have crappy music to name, don't all rock'n roll boys (and girls) make that shit up, those cool fake band names? if you really try hard, or relax and stop "trying", you can come up with a word/mispelling of a word/a combo of words that is original and unique, just gotta let the creative juices flow....

Or just copy The Beatles and choose a different bug - there are so many to choose from. I'd go for some thing like "The Sottyxerxids" (helps that they are also extinct) or "The Cryptoblattids".
Obscure diseases are also pretty cool - try "Cri du Chat Syndrome" or "Small Bowel Dysmotilities"

It's probably a good idea to pick a name that lends itself to being shouted rhythmically by at least 50,000 people at a stadium (why be modest). "Stuffing Jeremy inside a small box" is a bit of a mouthful and just won't sound as cool as many other shorter and snappier band names. Hell, even AC/DC used to be abbreviated to "AC" by their fans.

afaik it is that the commercial interests of an artist/group are very important. If your competitor is a small unknown local band which has just immaterial interest, you are favored in court if you could prove those... perhaps you can look it up at your official national Broadcast insitution for Interprets and Writers, in germany it's called the GEMA / GVL, in the US there are two of them (forgot the names, but i can look 'em up iyl), in the UK i don't know...
i think an artist without a national presence represented by such an institution is not considered "known" ...

If you want another bands name I suggest getting in touch with them through their agents and challenging them to a winner takes names battle of scissor, paper, stone! Although you will need to find an incentive for them if they win!
Alternatively, find and electronic thesaurus or go to dictionary.com, think of 1 or 2 words that mean something to yourselves (or words you really like eg 'sponge') and enter them into the thesaurus. Now scan through until until you find something that sounds cool, you might have to change course a little bit but you should come up with something eventually.
As last resort, go to the library and get a friend to blindfold you, spin you round and set you off looking for books. Randomly pick a book or 2 and then blindly select a page and a word (or some?). You might end up with Mother Theresa Colon Repair but you could pick a maths book with an equation on page 41?.....Oh, that's gone has it?

Does anyone know where I can find the online band-name register? My old band's name is on it, but subsequently, other bands have registered using the same name, and I'd rather like to keep it for myself!

im much to lzy to be bothered reading thru this whole thread, so this may have been brought up already, but how is it possible to check if a bands name is taken?
i seem to remember there was a site i found long ago that u could write yer bands name and do a search if it was taken, but thats site is long gone by now. :S

Don't think there is one. Basically you send a registration to ascap with 3 band names on it, after a while you hear back 'they're all taken', so you submit 3 new options etc. Of course if you're lucky, the first one of the first 3 you submit isn't taken yet.
