They should also include names of publishing companies, when your band name collides with an already registered publishing company, it won't work either (not an everyday occurance, but many publishers have names similar to for example electronic artist aliases).

I'm still thinking you can't really rely on things like that, and need to register your band with ascap/bmi/gema/whatnot very early on before your band starts to try turn the name into a brand.
Of course that register gives a pretty good idea of what names to consider. If I found a name already taken on there which happens to be what I just were dying to use for my band, and I'd not recognize the name, I'd still put it on the list of the performing rights organisation registration, and with any luck the name hasn't been used by anyone in the commercial world yet.

In college in the late 80's I thought up what I thought was a totally impressive idea of just using a "generic" name. People in the states will know what this means---for a while there was a trend of putting out products in totally white packages with big black letters that just said the product, not a brand name or logo. There were white cans of beer that just said BEER, and things like soup, etc.

"Band" was already taken, so I thought, what if you went to the grocery store to buy a band name, and you just bought the white box "no-name" brand. It would just be called "Band Name". So I ran that by some friends---let's call our band "Band Name".

Nobody thought it was even remotely funny. Somebody made the counter suggestion of calling it "Bad Name", though.

Or we could do another series like VH1's Bands on the Run, and the winner gets $1,500 worth of junk from Guitar Center and gets to be called Arcturus.

The other band will have to change their name and settle for something like Arctur-R-Us, or something.

Whiskey? I much perfer bourbon to scotch. But I'm dirty like that. But he's great, I've read one of his books on beer, also being a big fan of (good) beer.

I just go by "Jackson" in music related ventures.
