There are a couple of ways you can avoid phase-effect though, like with delay -- especially on non-articulated tracks that are mainly ooos and ahhhs and have no vocal inflections, and you can also filter the phasing or 'reverse-phase' a track so that it nulls the cross-phasing between it and a copy. But I believe they really did all those separate layers as he said.
Have you tried doing it that way to avoid phasing? It sounds unnatural still. Multiple takes has been the only way I've found to get it to sound right. I usually stack 4 tracks of guitar for my guitar sound, for example. Yes, it's a pain, but it works.

I do it all the time. If you listen to virtually ANY of my recent tracks, you can hear me doubling ALL my vocal tracks. I have cancelled out most of the phasing with delay, and thus it becomes more a 'chorus effect' or doubling sound. A few milliseconds longer and you start to hear actual echo and less of a phasing/doubling(chorus). Sometimes I roomverb one of the tracks and centre mix the other. It gives my voice a sort of haunting feel along with a good channel spread.

Anyway though, I agree it's way preferable just to cut new tracks and layer that way, just as you would with instruments -- esp since you don't have those artifacts to deal with and have more flexibility. :)

No joke, I once dreamed about Kenny G getting the shit kicked out of him by Brotzman and Zorn
Awww come on... Kenny G did for the saxophone what Michael Bolton did for cheezy ballads...

Errr... OK, I never said it was a strong argument. :?

I wonder if old Kenny actually set out on purpose to be the number one muzak hit (in every shopping mall, ice skating rink, elevator and supermarket in the known world) or he was dumbfounded that it happened and has lived in abject despair ever since.

Heaven knows we humans have now collectively heard enough soprano sax to last an eternity... :hihi:

Layers and layers of breathy female voices. We have some enya-esque vocals on our vocal textures library for Reason. We'll be coming out with something for SampleTank and Kontakt that has more of that stuff very soon.

Good luck!

Sorry, not Kenny G or Michael Bolton samples. ;) :o I did a session with MB once. It was one of the worste experiences in the studio I have ever had. Nightmare. Nothing worked and he was... well... you can imagine. I think the movie Office Space best sums it up.

There's only one way to acheive that sound...

The Enyama™ Rectal Reverb Unit.

Really, might as well use a flanger (shortest delay), chorus (slightly longer delay) or a delay/reverb unit to set the same effect. At least you get modulation and depth to choose from to smooth out the "problems" better. :D I was referring to just sliding your original recorded tracks around by a few samples. That's never sounded right to me no matter what I've applied it to, but nonetheless, it's a way to get that phasey effect if ya like it. 8)

Just possibly lip-synched?

What I want is a way of getting the Enya effect and the Cher effect...

I was praying that we'll never get to "cher effect" state :-)))

And... about the live performance... If I remember correctly there were a few occasions when she performed "live". "May it be" at the Oscar ceremony few years ago for example. Actually she just sings over the singback (if that's the correct term).

Yes,

they used a Quadraverb I read in an interview, no joke. :hihi:

Best wishes, FRitz
Can you give a link to that interview? :)
No. I think it was in one of the german Keys or Keyboards magazines.

Devon,

You are so wrong - only Waves Diamond bundle can make you sound like that :hihi:

Seriously, this is exactly how that get that sound. Right your music using a choral synth sound, then have your vocalist perform the individual lines. And a nice reverb and you're in business.

I read somewhere that Nicky Ryan uses OnePingOnly. :D

1. Grow up among speakers of several gaelic dialects, in a family that has a heritage of mouth music.

2. ???

3. Profit!

Seriously, isn't one of Enya's "secrets" simply that seh was an early adopter of Eventide gear? She has a real nice room to record in, that probably contributes.

Dozens or hundreds of vocal tracks... Björk does similar things to different ends. (At least Enya doesn't go feral and try to kill people in her path when the let her out of the cage.)
