Getting Audio from VCR's DVD's

I really want to get some samples off TV, VHS and DVD's at the moment. I have no idea how you go about doing this however.

I have a MiniDisc player, although I guess that would rubbish up the quality of the sample somewhat, not that that probably matters a great deal. I also have my girlfriends laptop, which only seems to have a "mic In" socket regarding audio.

I haven't checked out my DVD or VCR because I'm not really that sure of what I am looking for, but my actual TV has some things on the side that look like audio outs.

I know this stuff is probably really basic but I've just never actually tried doing it. Thanks for any help.

I know I can monitor my DVD's playing in my computer with my M-Audio soundcards software delta mixer, and then I can route that audio to EnergyXT.

It shouldn't be complicated with dvds. The method will depend on what you are after. If you simply want to record short bits of dialogs or music, play the dvd on your computer. If you're using Xp, go to the control pannel then set it to record what's is being played on the computer.The option should be in the "voice recording" section of the audio properties menu(you can choose between line in,mic in, and "mixer" Choose the latter. This way you can record on the fly(using MS recorder). You could also wire your MD recorder to the line out/audio output of your soundcard and record. You 'd then play the recording back from your hd and wire the line out of your MD to the line in of your soundcard.

Another method consists in ripping the audio content of the dvd on your HD, then convert the audio data(AC3 or LPCM) to standard wav. It's a little more complicated and time consuming and also recquires a few dedicated tools. It also recquires fair amounts of HD space. I have heard that there were some shareware tools which allowed dvd audio ripping, you'll have to google that.

As for the VCR, it depends on its outputs. If the tv has audio outs, you could wire them(I guess they are RCA) to the line in of your MD.

As far as quality is concerned, the loss shouldn't be unbearable whatever method you plan to use.

That method sounds good. Played around with it for a while though with no luck. I playing around with "Sound Recorder" and have set the sound recording device to mixer, but no luck?

hmm has anyone else encountered problems with this, it looks like just what I am after... (I've also tried all the different sound devices. And the green line does nothing regardless of the sounds I make on the computer.)

Sorry to hear it didn't work.You should then use the MD recorder.If you do the things properly,you will get a good result. Be sure to set the recording level high enough to get an optimum volume but not too high to avoid distorsion.

1.Rercording from the DVD being played: [Pc soundcard line OUT]->[MD recorder's line IN]
2.Recording the audio which has been recorded on the MD: [Md's line out]->[PC soundcard line IN] . YOu'll have to setup Windows so that it can record using the LINE IN as a source. Go to the control pannel etc...
Hopefully, it'll work.
