I don't listen to the radio much, though I used to sometimes back in Florida when we had an occasionally decent college radio station... industrial, darkwave, space music, Celtic folk, weird Finnish stuff, rockabilly, etc.

For a few months here we had a station that played swing, Sinatra, etc. and it was a nice change when I got tired of CDs (or while changing them).

It's since been replaced by another Clear-Channel owned hip-hop station, as if we needed another one.

thats the thing tho he sticks to a certain roundabout style,with peel it used to be youd never know what was next,sometimes it was shite yeah but occassionally you discovered a gem you would never have heard otherwise.
so yeah i suppose these djs are good in their field,but peel never had any thing so restrictive as a field

im not saying theyre shit just not exciting if you get me,its going to be a long time i think before we see a dj who is willing to go in the face of his boss's and play what he fancys, radio djs are supposed to play the hits not the tracks recorded on a walkman in jims bedroom

To be honest, I don't listen to the radio that often. Radio out here seems to be getting safer and safer. However, there is one decent station called Indie 103 (which is owned by Clear Channel, ironically). Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols has a show, and so does Rob Zombie, among others.

i used to also listen to smooth jazz stations for comic relief. "the best three things in life: a quiet sunset after a storm; a walk on the beach with your lover; and the sounds of smooth, smooth jazz playing all night long on ksax, 105.5."

i worked during the summer in a golf course mechanic shop, and of course classic rock was playing all day. i thought about recording a whole day's show and playing it back the next day to see if anyone would notice it was just a repeat, but i didn't have anyway to record 8 hours of audio.

and get this: now i'm in japan, and when i was going for a walk one day, i passed this auto-mechanic shop. guess what was playing? american classic rock. go figure.

popular radio stations are for people who want to hear the same thing everyday and be told what to listen to. anyone who really wants to hear interesting music knows that you'll rarely find it on the radio and that you have to search for it yourself.

it's probably been well over 10 years since I listened to anything besides NPR. for much of that time I just didn't listen to a lot of new music except what I was working on. but recently I got Sirius and it's pretty good. if nothing else it's got 3 channels of NPR talk

with satellite, internet radio (I also subscribe to Live365.com), internet downloads (emusic.com), and itunes and my ipod I buy and listen to more music now than any time in my life. who needs radio?

agree,

i enjoy weird music
for example, stuff like this:

similar music can be bought on CD
sometimes, and not in every store,
only a few selected stores have it.
or, only a few radio stations play it.

so, yes i don`t like radio stations
who "dictate what to listen to" period.

Hey, that's cool. I like this. This is refreshing.

I'm not so sure I would word it like you did...i don't think radio stations dictate what we should listen too. They simply offer something for you to either accept or reject. It just seems lately that the selection is poor or dated or narrowly focused. I guess theres no money in independant, creative or alternative music.

John Peel was one in a......well, he was the only one of his kind

I was listening one night and it was a Low track he was playing (Violence from long division) and it was promplty followed by a tack called Deaf, dumb, Blind from dj bleeds uzi party ep. Only jp could do such a thing, and only jp could have listeners that would appreciate such a thing

(I still have the show on tape somewhere, like a few of his shows.)

One of the few stations I listen to is KinkFM.
During the day it's mostly standard indie/"alternative" stuff, today's middle of the road I guess, but after 10 pm (local time) thay have specialised shows: metal, punk, dub/reggae/ska/dancehall, and so on.
I try to catch their show X-Rated whenever I can, they'll play anything from Anthony Rother to Thomas Köner, from Vladislav Delay to Current 93 and from Wolfgang Voight to Death In June. Their Electronation shows are nice, too.
And now that they have Podcasts, I don't have to miss a single show.

The only other station I listen to, apart from web radio, is Klara. It's a Belgian station that plays mostly classical music, but there's a bit of world music in there, too, and of course their show called Jazz (cue Fast Show jokes. Yes, it's very similar). Mixtuur, every weekday from 10 to 11 PM, is possibly the best radio show on earth. Just check their playlists at http://www.klara.be
