I already have SE since it came with my Studio Case but how much of an upgrade is it to get Player? I contacted Steinberg about it but it's been a few days and no reply.

I just don't want to spend $99 to get almost the exact same thing with just a different looking interface. Shouldn't Player ahve a much larger library?

I don't think theres an upgrade path from SE to player -Or if there is I haven't heard of it. I had HAlion SE and bought HAlion Player for 70 pounds - definitely different, and better. You get a lot of sounds with Player - 3Gb I think - very nice drums, pianos, guitars, strings etc - tho a lack of brass.

However I keep HAlion SE installed as it allows you to import Soundfonts, that you can then save as Halion Soundbanks and use in HAlion Player. the Player also has some tweakable effects for each sound. Its very nice.

IIRC Halion SE is based on Halion 2, where Halion Player is based on Halion 3.x

Some possible conflicts I can think of:
- Will H3 samplesets play in SE? *EDITED*
- If not, how many vendors are going to use H3 rather than H2 as the basis for their samplesets?
- Are some vendors going to encrypt their samplesets via the H3 dongle?

On the bright side, I believe Studio Case comes with a dongle for Cubase SE. As Halion Player doesn't ship with a dongle (they run $30 or so), I'd think you could use the Cubase SE dongle for your HP authorization.

I don't have Halion, but I had to decide whether to stick with Kompakt or upgrade to Kontakt2, and had to think about similar issues.

Thanks for the help...

Doug, how would u rate Kompakt? I'm considering the NI Essentials Bundle which includes Kompakt, Absynth 3, Battery 2....

As an instrument on its own, it's pretty decent. It has a better sampleset than Kontakt1.5 did.

As an alternative to Kontakt1.5, it can read most of the samplesets produced for Kontakt. As I understand it, some Kontakt samplesets nag when loaded due to differing features but for the most part they work ok.

As an alternative to Kontakt2? I wouldn't go there. Besides incomplete compatibility with K1 samples (as noted above), K2 samplesets will be substantially less capable in Kompakt - if they'll load at all. And already some vendors are coming out with K2-oriented samplesets, I'd expect this to be the baseline for other new samplesets.

Yes - you can use the Cubase SE dongle, and as far as I know, ANY Halion sampleset is playable in HP - I had confirmation today from an ebay supplier (Inspiration Sounds) about a HAlion Brass Sampleset - I wasn't sure if it would work with HP, but they assured me that it would, and I see no reason to disbelieve them.

You caught my booboo - I said HP when I meant to say SE. I question whether Halion 3 things - which WILL play in Halion 3 Player - will play in Halion SE.

I went back and edited my post to correct it.

I Understand - I will have a try and see as naturally I haven't done that. I have to re-install HAlion SE first (which means digging out the CD's) - will keep you posted.

Per Steinberg support:

"HALion player gives you the ablility to open more samples/programs than HALion SE. The content library is about the same."

Hmmm....The content library is about the same???

I tried loading HP sounds in HAlion SE, but can't - the HP soundbanks aren't in the usual fxp format - they are all bundled up in .hsb format - possibly something to do with the HP. I don't have any H3 samplesets to test.
