Im looking for something portable like the size of a diskman or an mp3 player that would be able to stream internet radio stations from wifi spots. Does anything like this exist yet? The only thing I know of is something called the "Sono", but I think its got some sort of receiver so you need to be near home. Im also not looking to buy a whole labtop. I just want something to play my lounge-radio at the coffee shops!!

where do you live? in north america we have XM and Sirius satellite radio services. I know XM offers a portable player in addition to their line of car radios. very cool stuff

xm and sirius... please. I dont think theres one station they put out that I would listen to. Its basically the same shit we all hear on the normal radio. Thats the beauty of a portable internet radio player. Thousands of stations for every genre of music!

I am sure Apple is working on an iPod that will do that. Someone has to. With all the streaming stations out there, it seems like the next logical step. Maybe you can get a PDA to do what you want. Then you will only be limited to where you can find a connection.

what about your cell/mobile phone?

...for satellite radio, i only have a mild interest in Sirius because of howard stern. with the holidays coming up, i was wondering what kind of nice toy i could ask for, and now i'm just starting to hear about these "wireless audio streamers." I am starting to doubt if the future of radio is in satellite especially at a monthly (or the cost effective lifetime) fee.

there are too many internet radio stations to count, and some of these thing will pick up any radio station - as long as they are on the net. this means i could listen to stuff from Detroit all the way to Tokyo. think it's too early to look into this technology? it still looks rather pricey - and some seem to be selective in their internet choices (making them not so "free").

currently there doesn't seem to be much for portable, other than the InTune 200 Globaltuner & Infusion:

home use, i've been looking at:

http://www.netgear.com/
http://www.sonos.com/ (super expensive)

a Pocket PC will do this very easily as long as it has a wifi card in it.

I used to have a tmobile pocket PC that could get internet radio anywhere I could get cell reception, but sometime the connections were slow, but in wifi that wouldn't be an issue.
