Can anyone explain in detail the difference between garage bands and basement bands?

Basement bands have to carry all their gear downstairs and don't benefit from natural light

It's just another pretentious pigeon-holing exercise.

garage bands have to worry about engine sounds and fumes.

well there are almost no garage bands in germany cuz our garages are not very big..... mine is almost non existant.. did I say almost...?

we have a big basement tradition though.... not me myself - well okay I live in the suterrain of this farm which most people consider a basement or even a cellar....

but yeah.. I see your point... but can't see mine now... damn it

I'm a Garage producer but the kind of Garage I do has nothing to do with Garage bands. The Garage bands that make the kind of Garage I make don't make music in a garage!

..Or basement. Well possibly.

Basements are the best places to make make garage music in and garages are where you want to be if you're making underground music.

I think the whole term 'garage band' was initially meant to be interpreted as a raw, not produced in a gazillion dollar studio, sound. I'd say that the most recent Metallica CD is kinda representative of that... Garage days re-re-revisited... Mostly because the tracks don't sound like they cost the price of a small country in production expenses (as opposed to say, the Black album).

Basement bands are synonymous to 'bedroom musicians' or indie artists...

... At least, that's my take on it.

in your warmer climate, you can have a band in a garage, like say your southern California. Though I have known some bands in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis that practiced in the hangar sized garages of your modern 3 car garage -- at least in the summer.

acoustically, as you might imagine, garages are very different from basements. All the more so if/when you can open the doors. If the neighborhood is rife with impressionable younger people and the band is 'ready', some very nice impromptu parties can break out.
This rarely happens in a basement. and the acoustics in a basement are generally less bright. Though one should not underestimate how well the sound can carry from a basement. back in my youth when i would go downstairs to practice drums, the lead guitar player who lived 5 houses away would hear me playing and come over to play. This was without amplification on the drums, but then he was eager for any reason to get away from home.

i'd like to publicly go on record to thank my parents and any parents who put up with all that noise in basements or garages.
real bands with real aspirations go on to find 'rehearsal space' usually in warehouses around here. you never hear anything about warehouse bands, so I'm assuming both garage band and basement band have something to do with a certain age requiring parental notification and/or talent level associated with that age

Garage bands are bands that have yet to play profesionaly in front of a pub audience. And as such they are a virgin band. They are ussualy raw and lack the polish of a more professional act.

My initial theory was that it was a europe vs america thing. Both are kind of the same, although americans tend to have more garages whilst europeans tends to go to the basement more.

I'm a european, and its god darn cold outside, besides, its harder to steal stuff from a basement then it is from a garage.
That includes melodies aswell as gear.
