I recieved an invitation to participate in this program. I would be traveling to Europe but it will cost me about $5,000. I was wondering if anyone here has gone before and if it has helped you now in obtaining any of your goals.
The trip will span 10 days and include a visit to the Salzburg Music Festival, listening to a discussion presented by a member of the Philharmonic Orchestra, and going behind the scenes at the Bosendorfer Piano Company to name a few of the events.
I'm sure this trip will have great educational value but I'm not sure if the price matches what I will get out of it. I can try to get financial help in my community but I have to organize it on my own and I don't know if I can cover the expenses.
I have 2 days to decide...

i just looked over the website. that would be an incredible experience if you decide to go. when i was in grade 12 i went on a school music trip to germany and it was one of the best experiences in my music education. there's a big part about learning music through textbooks, listening and having great teachers, there's a whole other part about it that involves getting out there and experiencing things.
it's expensive. if you can find a way to cover the costs then dont even think twice about it and get yer ass into Austria! i'm not a seasoned traveler, can someone tell me if $5,000 is reasonable for return airfare to the U.S., transportation all around these three countries, about 5 lectures a day, two meals, and accomodations for 12 nights?

yes i would love to go but i dont think i could ever find someone to nominate me! if i read everything correctly arent you one in fourty people nominated? i was a little confused by that, if so congratulations!
but honestly, the itinerary looked really good if you can get a good night's sleep everynight to seize those days.

I'm not really sure how I was nominated. I know it was through the Dean's List though. But they say you don't need to be nominated to go. You can still turn in an application.
Yeah, that's another thing I'm wondering. How much can I really get out of it? I can use it for a resume in the future but I don't know if that will help me much...

Looks, like a nice programm but seems terribly expensive. I am from Vienna Austria, which is the most expensive country of the ones you intend to visit, and if you are travelling on a budget you can get around with something like $40-$100/day. As far as I know the hostels here charge 15-25€/night (of course if you want to stay at a top notch hotel it´s more like 150-250), a ticket to the Musikverein, or Staatsoper, or Konzerthaus or whatever venue ranges from 5-40 Euro. I took a train to Budapest and back recently it cost me about 40 Euro for both ways. You can get a meal for 5 EURO, 45 EURO should be enough to go eating out in a really fancy restaurant. I have no idea about what the plane should cost, but I guess it must well below 1000 EURO both ways. So basically they make you pay $2000-3000 just for the lectures. Sounds like a rippoff to me.
Imho, If you are willing to spend that kind of money, take 2-3 month off and come to europe as an individual tourist. This way you will really experience the place.

yeah of course if you do these things yourself you can get a different type of trip but that's not to say that on this trip a whole $2000-3000 are going straight towards lectures.
You are paying for an overall experience where you will have everything worked out for you(like your translating guides), and extra luxuries. a normal trip to europe you might be able to arrange for cheaper but you could be fumbling around all day finding where the hell you are and what to do(if you want to look at the bad side of it). hard to compare the two types of trips.

softegg - I haven't really thought of traveling in the near future at all until I recieved this letter. Thanks for the feedback. Other people that I've talked to said it was overpriced also.

I'm confused! You were possibly nominated by the Dean's list, but then no one at your university knows what it is? no, I haven't asked the Dean, but the person in charge of the honors societies asked the dean's list administrator and the never heard of it... maybe it's just a gimmic?
