Hi folks ...

We have just installed Cubase SE onto a machine in a classroom and are setting it up before we install copies on every other pc in the room. We have a midi track with a simple drum beat going out to a vst instrument and want to record a bass guitar (plugged in via a separate interface) on to an audio track.

The thing is, when we record the bass on to the audio track, the track is recording the drum beat as well. We can't record the bass without the midi drums bouncing down onto the same track. In fact, we can play the midi track and press record on the audio track (without touching the bass) and it will record the drums perfectly. However we don't want this to happen.

I have been through the preferences and the monitoring setups but can't find a way of stopping this. The worst thing is, I've seen this happen before and I can't remember how to fix it.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

The quick and easy answer is that you are recording the output of the soundcard, not the input.

If you are using Cubase SE check the devices menu and open the VST Inputs window where you will be able to enable the proper inputs. Then make sure you've selected the correct input on the audio track.

If you are using Cubase SE 3 you need to go to the VST Connections screen instead where you setup the correct inputs.

You should also make sure you are using the correct drivers for you soundcard. You will find this setting in the Devices menu under Device Setup. The drivers should be called "Soundcardname + ASIO" or something similar. Not DirectX or Multimedia ASIO which are only there for compatibility reasons.

Thanks ever so much for your help - you were on the right lines - we have a usb mixer as the input and it had a switch on the back for usb mixdown which was sending everything back into the audio track.

Thanks again for the quick reply
