OK Sonar heads, solve this dropout problem and I'll give you

I know that this sounds like a long shot Hunter, but try running a disk check program over your drives...

Hunter,
This may/may not be related in issue but, it certainly helped to cure Sonar 4 of a few timing issues for me.
Download a program that can alter PCI bus latency timings. Todays Graphics cards hog the PCI Bus to the detriment of Audio cards.
I have increased my Graphics card timing from 32 to 128 and vice versa for my EMU 1820 card. This cleared up all my problems and may work for you or others. The program is free and can be downloaded from:

Sounds interesting though I'm always slightly scared of doing things like that.Dunc wrote:Hunter,

Could you give more info on the automation bug? Has it been acknowledged by cakewalk? Does it only affect certain plugs? or all plugs?

Well, they're aware of my bug report, yes. And confirmed it wasnt fixed in 5.01ResonantOrder wrote:Could you give more info on the automation bug? Has it been acknowledged by cakewalk?
Its happening in the random sampling of VST effect plugins I've tried at any rate...Does it only affect certain plugs? or all plugs?

Thanks whyterabbyt.
I did find this post at the Sonar forum:
http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=6500 ... ug򞭨
That's why I thought this problem was taken care of.

Ah, I havent seen that stuff. Just about to test it out in 4.03 and 5.01...

I usually set my buffers to 2000.
Guess that's why I haven't had much of a problem.

Hmmm. The thread seems to imply that if your Global>MIDI> "Prepare Using x Millisecond Buffers" parameter is larger than the AutomationDecimationMsec in aud.ini then it should clear up the problem...
However in both 4.03 and 5.01 the MIDI buffers parameter is at 500mS, and the audi.ini value is at 50mS...

This is a list of settings that I've grabbed from the forum over the last couple of years. I don't know who wrote most of it, but if you read this- I thank you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dropouts:
I have seen the dropout thing happen before, but this only happened when I had my "I/O
Buffer Size" at the default 64KB. Bump it up to at least 256KB or higher if you haven't
already.
Things to try:
Use WDM mode
set I/O Buffer Size = 256KB (or higher)
make sure "Enable Read Caching" is not checked
make sure "Enable Write Caching" is not checked
set DMA Buffer Size = 64 (for all sample rates)
set MIDI Playback Buffers = 2000 ms
Disable BusMastering somehow on your video card driver (along the same lines as what
losguy pointed you to. I bet the XP video card driver is allowing the card to hog more
bus time than what the Win98 driver did)
Oh, and add in TTSSEQ.INI under [Options] if not using this feature:
IgnoreMidiInTimeStamps=1
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone know any details on the ExtraPlugInBufs setting in AUD.INI?
Has anyone ever upped this setting from it's default of 0 to 1,2,4, etc and seen any
quantifiable benefit? If so what problem did changing this seem to cure?
Ah, you've been keeping this little secret a secret! LOL
I just upped the setting to 32, just to try and see what may happen. I took a heavliy
loaded project that, before changing this setting, required me to bounce down a few
tracks before I could on a Vsampler piano part without causing glitches/audio dropouts,
etc.
SoI upped that variable to 32 and guess what.... I can now play back the whole project
without having to bounce anything down! Now that's interesting! (AND GOOD!).
Also - I notice less CPU spiking, and, the cpu on this project would go as high as 91%
at some points, yet NO dropouts or glitches. I've never been able to do THAT before.
Also - the trick someone mentioned about the EQ visibility having something to do with
meters, well, that too seems to be effective.
Even when this project would hover around 80% cpu (during lots of note playing, etc), I
was able to keep the meters "relatively" working.
This is great stuff/news. I hope others read this who use a lot of plugins as I do!
Thanks for that info Scott!

ExtraPluginBufs does not affect latency. The only negative side-effect is increased
memory usage... so I typically recommend setting it to 32 or so and leaving it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Better real-estate usage in TV:
In your Sonar program folder, open up cakewalk.ini in Notepad. Under the [WinCake]
section, add the following line:
TVWidgetsStickInHeader=1
...and then watch what happens to widgets when you expand tracks. They remain in the
track header. No more wasting that space.
2) Fix slow response when stopping transport:
Ever notice that when you stop the transport, it can take a second or so before Sonar is
ready for you to press play again? This is due to the fact that Sonar3 now sends
zero-controller messages at every stop of playback. Turn this off under Project
Options/MIDI Out. The transport will become much more "agile" as a result, especially in
ASIO mode. This may, of course, result in some issues with certain synths... but if you
try it and it works out, it can definitely be a useful change. Maybe even worth changing
your normal.cwt.
3) Decrease the time it takes to bounce:
In AUD.INI, find the line "BounceBufSizeMsec=0" and change it to 50. This will tell
Sonar to do offline bounces as if it were operating at a 50ms latency, which relieves
stress on the CPU, and can significantly decrease bounce/export times.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Panning:
I prefer -3dB center, sin/cos taper, constant power, as it sounds like all the good
consoles I've worked on. Benefits are that I'm used to a pan pot behaving like that, and
so don't have to adjust relative values as I would with the default setting.
