My problem is that it plays the wav files at the project tempo. Can I set somewhere to play it at the original tempo?

In preferences (I think) there's a general tab and you turn off autowarp...
Play what you feel and feel what you play.

Also, once a clip is imported you can simply turn off "Loop" and "Warp" from the clip properties.
