this is a longshot, but anyone know of a vst instrument/effects combo that can get the overdriven organ sound that a lot of the canterbury players used. i used to have an actual 60s lowrey organ that was a dead ringer for mike ratledge's sound but it is dead and while i have some good hammond instruments i cant get it to sound quite cheap enough, haha. and as for the effect, pretty sure t hey used an overdriven tubeamp and/or fuzz box. any ideas?

As far as I know, Ratlege simply used tube overdrive, but that distinctive tone is something I have yet to accomplish with any organ VSTi. I've almost come close using the preamp effect in Sampletank. Sometimes I do better starting with combo organ samples than Hammond, sounds natually "reedier". Mostly, I just hook up a synth playing organ samples and work the distortion effects(built in or plug in) and the filters and eq to taste.

I'm just glad to know that someone elso around here even knows who Soft Machine and the Canturbury scene were. My turntable is broken, and they are what I miss most.

actually, playing with NuBiLE, with some intelligent programming and overdrive can do that kind of sound. Don't put it through a leslie, just take the raw output and drive it.

I'm originally from the place. You can't throw a half brick without hitting half a dozen ex-members of Caravan playing in a pub band.

ha, glad to see some people are fans. yeah, caravan had that lead sound, like when "for richard" moves into overdrive, literally. incidentally, i am defnitely able to get some of the gnarly rhodes sounds from stuff like robert wyatt's matching mole, that is pretty easy and rewarding, haha. i will try some of the recommendations.

yay soft machine! i read an interview in wire magazine with hugh hopper that they used 'fuzz' on everything.

the rhodes/organ together are so lush, i have a feeling a lot of the sound also comes from production.

3rd is one of my fave albums of all time.
