Rhino sustain pedal problem? Or is it me?

Hi!

Just got the Rhino... great sounds! I'm looking forward to learning what all those wavy lines mean...

Maybe I hit a problem though? I can't seem to get the Rhino to respond to the sustain pedal.

I can see the midi light on the Rhino window flashing when I press the pedal... and all the other vst instruments work as expected with the pedal(I tend to use the sustain pedal a lot when programming...)

I searched this forum but couldn't find anyone else mentioning any problem - am I the only one?

I'm using Cubase SX 2.

Any help much appreciated!

Hi,

I bought Rhino yesterday and am running it in Sonar5 producer and have the same problem. When playing live Rhino doesn't respond to the hold pedal. Yet, if I record my playing and use the hold pedal then replay the track Rhino responds to the pedal?

I was wondering if I was also missing something

Rog.

Well... is the sustain pedal working for someone in Sonar5 ? And, which midi controller are you using ?

Hi Tick,

Thanks for getting back.

I am using a Kawai K4. Which transmits on the standard cc64 127=on 0=off.

It works fine with the following -

Pentagon 1 dxi synth. bundled with Sonar 5.
Reason 3 demo via a rewire bus.
RGC:audio sfz - VST plugin - via the bundled sonar wrapper.

I have another VSTi soft synth with the same problem - perhaps it's a bug in the vst development kit?

As I said before it works fine on replay.

Do I have to do any mapping of CC64. or turn it on in any way?

Thanks for the response.

Rog.

I'm using a Roland PC 200mkii controller keyboard - likewise, CC #64; 127=pedal down; 0=pedal up.

In cubase, there seeems to be no response to the pedal even when I tried that 'record and then play back' trick...

I found Rhino responds to the pedal fine in Xlutop Chainer when Chainer is used standalone... But when I use Chainer loaded as a VST into cubase with Rhino loaded into that, the pdeal stops working again...

Thanks to both of you!

Try loading Rhino into Cubase without Chainer. If that doesn't work try looking at Options, MIDI Setup, Filtering and make some adjustments there.

Normally I am not using 'Chainer' - I only downloaded the demo of that to troubleshoot this problem. And the result was that the sustain pedal:

- works fine in standalone Chainer
- does not work when Rhino is loaded straight into Cubase
- Does not work when Rhino is loaded into chainer within Cubase.

There's no midi data being filtered in Cubase itself. If I unload Rhino and load any other vsti into the same slot, the other one will respond to the pedal fine...

On my system, There just seems to be a problem with the combination of Rhino and Cubase SX 2.

Not the end of the world, but i would hope to avoid buying Chainer just so that I can program Rhino...
and I don't want to avoid programming Rhino!

anyone know if there is anything like 'Chainer', but free? That might sort me out...

Cheers!

What about Rhino standalone ? Or Rhino in minihost ?

Er... didn't notice that I had a standalone Rhino! I found it though, amongst all the stuff downloaded from the rhino area, and it works great.

I'll program patches in that and I'm sure I'll work out something for recording in cubase. So, I'm pretty happy - Rhino-wise anyway!

Best Regards,

Great (although I'd sure like to know why it is not working in Sonar). Also, there's an ASIO version of the Rhino standalone in the private area - this one will give you better latency than the one bundled with the demo.

Hi,

I just got to the bottom of the problem. My Kawai K4 keyboard transmits a CC123 "all notes off" message when the last note is released. Even though the hold pedal is pressed Rhino turns all notes off.

I found that if you hold a chord, press the hold pedal, and release all but one note, all the previous notes hold.... until you release the last one.

This seems to be a midi implementation issue. If the hold pedal is pressed single note off messages maintain the note. Whereas all notes off ignore the hold pedal and stop the notes playing.

Well my understanding of "all notes off" is that it is an emergency CC, to stop all ringing notes - whatever the hold pedal state. I may be wrong, though.
Can filter out CC123 directly in your host ?

I'm pretty sure you're right. AFAIK CC123 is used in "Panic" buttons etc.

Sonar5 has a midi filter plug in but this doesn't work on the live stream and so doesn't help.

I did a search and found a midi plug in that was written just for this problem ie CC123 and Cakewalk / Sonar. It's at
http://www.tencrazy.com/gadgets/mfx/ (http://www.tencrazy.com/gadgets/mfx/)

With this plug in the problem goes away and the hold pedal works as per my other soft synths and jv1010.

F.Y.I.
If found out that Sonar has 2 levels of panic button
1) send cc123 or
2) send a note off message for all notes on all midi-channels!

Thanks

Rog.
