I love the SoM homepage (and their music too, of course), they write quite a lot about how they've done stuff throughout the years and they do it with a nice sarcastic attitude...
Come to think of it, it might be interesting to check out the tech section of their page in general, SoM seem to be one of those bands who've always managed to turn some kind of limitation (like using a crappy drum machine or recording through a practice amp) into a sound so if nothing the tech talk might provide some inspiration to do stuff even if your equipment isn't the best.

Not nearly as bad as when I watched Dire Straits do Walk of Life live on TV once. The melody line that's played during the chorus sounds like an accordian . . . on stage they were using a Synclavier to play it . . . That was a $250,000 keyboard at the time!
