Oh, and if it's anything like the Radiohead - Hail to the thief CD i bought, the bitrate will be limited to 96kbps. And no, the irony of that particular purchase didn't go over my head.

How did they do that? I'd have thought Radiohead would not approve of such shenanigen's or don't they have any control over it?

They probably have no control. As big as some bands (feel they) are, they're still the record companies bitches whilst under contract.

I cannot believe what i have just read... what the hell is this world coming to? With this sort of warped thinking, they might as well shut down the internet. I mean now we have all this bullshit with music and movies and downloads... i mean if this continues the way its going, after the entertainment industry is finished, then all the other corporate giants and morons will start with their crap. I can just picture drug companies suing websites for illegal reproductions of the drugs ingredients, etc. u know copyright infringement. Next thing you know any sort of info accessed without permission will be illegal. Oh boy... this just proves once again, just how cruel capitalism is/can be.. and how MONEY is the root of all EVIL.

oh and while we're on the subject.. lets suppose they set up a lyrics/tabs/sheetmusic download service... how much can they realistically charge people for a single tab of a song? 2cents? Even if they get millions and millions of downloads, that would still not begin to cover the legal costst associated with setting up/forcing such a fascist regime onto people. *shudder* ok i'm gonna go vomit now. By the way... where can i download the lyrics to Crazy frog - Axel F???

Pretty much everyone here is a musician and/or songwriter.

That means that any power and authority these "industry" folks grab for themselves, they also hand to *you*, at least if you live in a country with an Equal Protection doctrine.

NO! If the industry lobbyists have their way, you'd have the protection to seek the *same* level of damages as anyone else, including, in the extreme hyperbole of the article, to have the infringer jailed. This would be a really nifty development for the FSF and the copyright holders in the GNU project for instance.

If "They" strengthen "copyright" *too* much, it will eventually cause them to attack each other. All this is happening at the same time that there is (1) a renaissance taking place where independent artists are more prolific than *ever*, and (2) the means are emerging for independent musicians to make commercial-quality output and enter into broad distribution.

Let the "industry" strengthen copyright protections at the same time, and we will have a revolution in the arts that rivals what the Medicis had!
