What am i going to download with my 24mb/s internet connection now that the world has been copyrighted? I'm only 500 metres from the exchange so I'm full throttle and ready to go.

That's some f**ked-up thinking there. But whatever.
When in history has an individual artist had such an easy time going from concept to execution to distribution? Are you taking it for granted? The whole cheap digital recording, virtual instrument, and free distribution to put your work in front of millions of people?

There's never been so much power in the hands of the artist before.

To be snarky, I'll say "when distribution wasn't part of the equation." When music wasn't a commodity.

Not at all. But what does that have to do with the draconian copyright crackdown of recent years? How does the RIAA suing a 12-year-old girl, Sony hosing peoples' PCs, or sending webmasters to prison give me more power as an artist?

That means that any power and authority these "industry" folks grab for themselves, they also hand to *you*, at least if you live in a country with an Equal Protection doctrine.
You really fkucing believe that? God, you're a chump.
Do you really believe this Keiser guy has any influence on Congress, or any influence at all, other than what's needed to get his words printed by the news media?
I'm not sure. He's a member of an organisation representing various big corporate interests.

You tell me.

It means that your lawyer has one more argument to use against the record label when you have to sue the label to get your money for the royalties on your IP they spent on their lawyers vigorously protecting your IP from 12 year old webmasters.

what if you know a beatles song by heart? will the lawyers rip it out?

They will. Then they'll burn it and cast your body down the stairs, after which it will be served as stew.

No, I already have a copyright on anything using a G chord at any time after an F chord. Check it. I'm serious.

Sorry to bring this dark episode from your past back Robert, but I tried to 'check it' and all I could find was this:

This is a tricky issue, legally, I would think, since are they saying that learning a song by ear is copyright infringement? Can anyone be sued if they play Kumbahya at a campfire singalong without paying royalties?

I don't like directly copying a recording and sharing it on the internet, but it seems to me that if you learn someone's song yourself you souldn't be able to be sued. I would never consider it as an artist unless someone transcribed my music and then took credit for writing it.

This also brings up an important point. What if someone else plays some music on their stereo, you overhear it, and have the song going through your head for several hours?

:o

Would a little "jail time" be in order just to make an example of you?

I'd like to hear some major artists chime in on this. I learned some of Frank Black's (Pixies) songs off his first solo album. I wonder if he'd be hopping mad that he didn't get paid because I was ripping him off as I diddled away on my acoustic guitar.

God damn I'm a selfish bastard! :-o :-o :-o
