Look, I think if I want to work out the chords to Short People (Got no reason, Short people got no reason to liiiive...) by Randy Newman and play it on my Washburn acoustic electric at a local bar one night while local soroity girls sip Long Island iced teas and giggle, I should be able to do it in peace. I think the guy who wants to "punish" people with jail time for their crimes against humaniy (which included, among other things, learning the TAB parts to She's My Cherry Pie, that one song by Damn Yankees (can't remember the name but you know---it's that one where Nuge busts through the door and just starts wailing on his zebra print guitar ) and also learning seven or eight hits by Winger), I think that guy should really just get a life!!!

Look at midis:

You can still trawl the web for a free midi for free if you really want it, as there are too many sites for Sony etc to close.

But if you want a really good quality midi, one worth having, you can pay a few quid and buy one from Elite.

Another case in point:

I wanted the tab to King Will Come by Wishbone Ash, but found that the tabs online are fairly crap.

The published tab, with Andy Powell's collaboration, has a great tab score. But it costs 15 quid - which is a lot if you only want one track out of twelve.

Online high quality tabs for a few quid a pop sound okay to me.

And the web will still have lots of freebies anyway, because it always does.

As usual, these things get blown out of all proportion.

You're OK paying for something that should be free? IE: The ability to LEARN your favourite songs for your OWN listening pleasure and NOT for public consumption?

When bands play bars, if they are playing covers, the bar HAS to have an ascap license. Otherwise they are not supposed to let the band play the covers.

When a cover band plays, it's because the bar has paid for that band to play covers.

If covers are being played other than in bars, then it's not even worth worrying about.

This is just a "lets leech more money" thing, and you're bowing to it?

There will always be online free lyrics and tabs, just as there are still free midis today.

Everybody's contending for a piece of the action - lawyers, artists, freeloaders, the musical population of Russia, everybody. This is how it is.

But if you want reliable quality, then you might have to go to a reliable vendor. But reliability is maybe worth paying for.

At the opposite end, anyone's welcome to use their own musical ear to work out a tab, or write down a lyric.

You're not trying to blow this out of proportion are you, chibs
