reference to the right wing christian agenda of the current u.s. administration & the use of language laden with christian sybology etc. - for example the 'crusade' in iraq & 'doing gods work' etc.
Maybe?

Bowie didn't say it....it's just what the song "under the god" is interpreted as being about.

It's a metaphore (sometimes used in lyrics and poetry). Not to be confused with literal meaning or facts. :P

I assume he is referring to the US status in the world. I suppose the same metaphore could apply to the British Empire when it existed. The US plays god with it's foreign policy. That's my interpretation (a personal reading of Bowies metaphore.)

I'd agree with that, munchkin.

isn't that a line from 'i'm afraid of americans'?
I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the world
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the world
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid of Americans

God is an American
God is an American
not sure what's there not to understand?

exactly. I've gone through the entire song, which supports up to the said statement. which is why i agve it as my example for people to know what I'm talking about instead of writing a whole paragraoh on what I'm wondering about:wink:

Bowie's career spans over what, 4 decades? LOL i wouldnt make my decision over one song, much less one line from it

From "I'm Afraid of Americans" off the Earthling CD. Diverdee has the right idea. Fear and awe of Superpatriotism from an outsider-living-in-America's perspective. I experienced it when I went to Arkansas for a couple of years. The prevailing and dominant(unfortunately) American notion that the U.S. is the centre of the universe, entitled to rule the world, even own the moon, etc... all somehow justified through Christianity.
