thanx. i feel a little less stupid nowThe old expression “they are one and the same” is now often mangled into the roughly phonetic equivalent “one in the same.” The use of “one” here to mean “identical with each other” is familiar from phrases like “Jane and John act as one.” They are one; they are the same.

From I'm Afraid of Americans, written with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. The Chase wrote:"God is an American"
ummmmmmm what?
If you want a catchphrase for Bowie, try "Chameleon". He continually reinvents himself by trying different musical styles and associated different public personas. Look at progression from the Hunky Dory album to Ziggy Stardust, then Aladdin Sane to Heroes. Then look at Heathen.
Love Bowie's work or hate it, there's no one like him.
We shall see orchestral machines with a thousand new sounds, with thousands of new euphonies, as opposed to the present day's simple sounds of strings, brass, and woodwinds. -- George Antheil, circa 1925 ---

What? Nobody likes Labyrinth? How terrible!

Sure perhaps it's probably not as good as say Never Ending Story...but hey
I can think of worse things to give a child to watch and torment their parents with..
I know a few girls who are a bit Bowie mad. I'm not sure why. Might have to do with the dancing in tights in Labyrinth thing, not sure. "We can be heros" isn't so bad, saw that performed on a rerun of Live Aid.
As for those Americans, never quite know when or where they might strike/bite etc..
Though I guess El Brujo has part of that question answered..

There are two David Bowies. One of them spent many hours composing the songs that made up unforgettable albums like Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane; the other David Bowie sauntered into the studio with a large bag of coke and only the vaguest idea of what he intended to do, allowing disco-froth like Let's Dance to emerge extempore, from studio jams.
It's the first David Bowie that I love. The second David Bowie said all there was to say in an Eighties interview when he remarked: "In the Ziggy Stardust days I thought I was a songwriter who had something to say. Now I think of myself as just an entertainer".
In fact, he never had much to say but he said it very well indeed. With Ziggy Stardust he did what few artists have ever managed to do convincingly - he created another world as bizarre and yet as internally coherent as Zappa's Apostrophe.
Better yet, the music was beautiful as well as innovative.
I guess I expected too much from David Bowie, though I'll always love his early stuff.

i remember NME doing a most influential or maybe it was important musician poll round about the time i stopped reading it and David Bowie got voted number 1, didn't know him much then and thought the poll was rubbish but thinking about it now i can almost see where they're coming from.
even the disco froth turns me on...
