I didnt know the theremin counted as a synthesizer

His name doesn't come up very often, but Hugh LeCaine built the first voltage controlled synthesizer (The Sackbut 1945). His synths employed touch (and even light) sensitivity. Anyone who likes the look of Symptohm:Melohman should take a look at this! Amazing synth. It even had multiple pressure/touch sensitive areas to alter things like formants. His synths are in a museum in Ottawa, Canada. His website and pictures are here. He also created a Mellotron-like instrument among others.

"Le Caine was familiar with Morse Robb's Wave Organ and the Hammond Organ, and had built a touch-sensitive electronic reed organ in the 1930s. Le Caine's Sackbut, however, used an entirely different method of sound generation and control--voltage control--a method that later became the standard approach in electronic music. Because it pioneered this technique, the Sackbut is considered to have been the first synthesizer."

Moog did not invent the synthesizer but he perfectioned it.

Moog started building theremins and then he got into building synths in the 60's. He came up the the control voltage paradigm which was the basis for modular systems and basically all analog synths.

Before that time there were a few inventions which paved the way for Moog and others (Alan Pearlman, Tom Oberheim, Don Buchla, etc). Among these inventions are the Theremin, the Ondes Martenot, electric organs (Hammond, Farfisa, etc), the vocoder, the RCA synthesizer (first substractive synth), the Wurlitzer Sideman (first drum machine), the Chamberlin MusicMaster (predecessor to the Mellotron), and maybe some others.
