Someone Explain David Bowie to me

Tankgirl, that sums it up perfectly. Though one of those jams resulted in Ashes to Ashes, which is one of may all-time fave pop songs.

My favourite Bowie album is Hunky Dory by miles. It shits all over Ziggy Stardust, as does The Man Who Sold the World.

I don't know if I can explain it, but having Bowie in your record collection was on the long list of arbitrary things necessary to get laid.

Also, the Ziggy Stardust album's imperative "Play at maximum volume" was responsible for setting me on a course of the pursuit of better hi-fi gear than I could ever have had. I´m afraid Bowie may be correct to a certain degreee. I recall turning from atheism to the various alternatives. There was blood and hell around after that. Bowie is, as opposed to religions, a great phenomenon with a remarkable voice. Sometimes his voice is too large for the rock spectrum. Outside was a great album, his dramatic voice suited the drama of the songs. I think he wants to have hits but have forgotten how to make them. He said something like "I still have no clue when it comes to hits".

Ziggy Stardust era was fantastic Bowie, not too keen on anything since (although I have got a copy of Tin Machine on vinyl somewhere..)

I quite liked Tin Machine, I seemed to be alone in that thinking though
I thought the guitar playing from Reeves Gabrels was inspirational at the time. There are some nice songs on those albums, not all of them sung by Bowie.

I only have one of the Tin Machine albums (makes a note to buy any others). I agree that Reeves playing is quite inspirational.

As for Bowie's career, all I can say is there are very few artists who remain in the regular rotation of my cd changer, he's one of em.
