I'm always in for a character delay...delays are my best friend.
But in the blurb on the news, it says amongst the more usual features...
FFT bin delay: The modulation which you set with knob 3 and 4 can be delayed per bin for every FFT. Starting with bin 0. With a maximum delay of 512 bins.
Errrr...can anyone enlighten me what that means? I'll d/l it and give it a run hopefully today anyway, but I just like to know what gobbledygook actually means.

I'm guessing it's some kind of spectral delay type thing for filtering or something?

With FFT, the number of frequency bins usually denotes the number of bands the signal will be split into. So from 0 to 22050 Hz, the signal will be split into 256 (512 apparently was an error) separate streams of localized bands (and often by a fixed distance).

In FFTFun, it just means that you can delay the modulation that affects each bin. (at least, I think that's what it is doing)

Yep, that's it. And you're also right, kritikon; it acts like a simplified Spektral Delay would. It's a lot cheaper though  , so it's a fair tradeoff between complexity and price.

I'm getting very crackly, distorted sound with it. Is anyone else?

Incorrect, sir... it sounds like a simplified Spektral Delay. The diferences are that you have control over individual bins (or groups of bins actually) in Spektral Delay as far as amplitude, delay time and feedback go. You also have individual control over left and right channels, and a couple more algorithms to use as mod sources.

But, the new kid on the block's free, so as I said earlier, it's a fair tradeoff
:)

Try setting your ASIO buffers to multiples of 256 (256, 512, 768, 1024, etc.)

oh well. maybe I'm just stupid but I couldn't ever get this sound from spectral delay.

If the spectral delay was simplified, then you could. :D

think I best crawl back to one ping only! all this delay talk is getting far too confusing for me. :clown:

I'm loving this plug already. Even without the FFT stuff you can do some amazing time mangling (just using the delay and modulation with zero feedback).

Post

Thanks for the replies...makes some kind of sense to me now. I haven't had a chance yet to play with it, but maybe today...at least I know it's not one of those that are destined straight for the recycle bin. Sounds like it has lots of potential.

Thats right shamann. I made this plugin to explore the possibilities of FFT. I will make an update comming spring, which will allow BPM syncing and other kinds of modulation. And I hope to think of new interesting algorithms to expand the FFTfun VST range.

Glad you guys like it!
Cheers
