For album, I couldn't just pick one, but for me it's been a year of Matthew Bower:
Skullflower - Orange Canyon Mind
Sunroof! - Silver Bear Mist

plus two archival discs re-released:
Sunroof! - USSA
Total - Solid Objects Cast At Goblins

For single, has to be Sufjan Stevens' John Wayne Gacy, Jr.

I was blown away by alot this year, Bright Eyes(Im awake its morning), Sigur Ros, Super furry animals, and Surfjan stevens are all great albums.

I'll throw in for Sufjan Stevens - even though I haven't heard it yet, I heard 'Seven Swans' from 2004 this past weekend and hated it at first but after about 4 tunes I was completely hooked.

I give honorable mention to "boy least likely to...(best party ever)" for his extremely corny, yet somewhat catchy cheesetastic they might be giants + petsounds + childrens music menage a'trois...

ALL of elliott's CD's are first class........the recording quality of the first two (maybe even the first three, depending on your QC) is't great.....but adds a charm that seems fitting anyway. The songwriting & musicanship cannot be faulted in the least. What a brilliant man he is/was.

The really good albums usually stand out better with the benefit of hindsight. There's been a lot this year that I have enjoyed, particularly in the jazz scene.

In terms of a good old-fashioned pop album, Goldfrappe's Supernature stood out for me this year.

I had roman candle and either or. The sound quality doesnt bother me at all. Great songwriting can overcome that, which he certainly did. I bought basement on a hill and Fig 8 soon after BOAH was released. I wish that Elliot had been there to see that album get finished, as it just doesnt quite sound like it is finished to me. Ive heard XO and enjoy it, but I think he hit the mark with Fig 8 mesself.

I read somewhere that he has some music finished for a sound track or something like that. I will look around for that news post I read.
