Hi, I have finished my first Philharmonik piece, which uses the choirs quite a bit

It's entitled "The Place Where the Silent Ones Kill" and can be found at http://www.myspace.com/alhazred (it'll play automatically on the flash player on the site).

This was sequenced with Rosegarden and recorded with Ardour (on Linux), and the plugin was hosted in Sonar on a second machine.

I am going to go check this out in a bit. But, I just wanted to say that I think it is great to hear you guys sharing the music you're making with our products. Keep it up! This is fun.

I like how the track was easy to access first of all.

Critique: I dont like critiquing people cause that implies that I think I know what i'm doing. But I feel that giving an opinion at least might improve a track so here we go: I like what you're doing here, but I think you have the opportunity to take the track to a next level. I'm not sure how many instances of the plugin you're using but dont be afraid to use more slots here and get more layers going.

at about 1:50 into the track this is a decisive point in the song. I would bring in a horn ensemble here to add some beef and fire into the pot. and maybe consider bringing in some more ensembles earlier on? horns will help arouse some emotion. so will some of your traditional rock sounds like acoustic drums and electric guitar but that might be stretching it a bit.

I think the solo staccato violin sound that also enters around 1:50 needs a bit of tweaking. i cant put my finger on it at the moment.

just some thoughts on how to improve it. good work and great stuff for a 1st philharmonik track. keep it up and be sure to continue sharing

Thanks for listening! I appreciate the feedback! I am only using one instance of the plugin and intended to go for a sparse sound, mainly letting the cello and timpanis lead the instruments through with a kind of slow-shudder doom.

Oddly enough, I was going to put a horn section at the section you indicated, but just couldn't get it to sound right -- never scored for horns before so I was going into uncharted territory here.

Funny you mention acoustic drums and electric guitars, I do have another piece I am working on that is blend of orchestral sections, cathedral pipe organ, choir and heavy electric guitars and kit drums... "Phantom of the Opera" meets Dream Theater. :-)

As for the staccato strings, they are a a combination of detache violas and the expressive violas. If you have any suggestions for that part, please let me know.

Yeah writing for horns can be tricky. I usually just call up an ensemble patch and use them as a bed of sorts. there are some nice stacc horns in there too though that might be of use to you.

So the string part, I looked into it a bit and i think think the Combi "Solo Violin DYN" might do the trick for you. If you are using an ensemble patch which you might be, I think you can do something similar. Basically what the DYN combi will offer your string part is that not every note you are playing in "Where the Silent..." has to be Detache. You'll want some notes to be Detache like the first Eb run but then when you move up to the Bb those notes can be a normal long bowing sound. Also you can experiment with Stretch to manipulate the lengths of all the notes.

It's really funny i've never heard of Rosegarden or Ardour before. Sounds like a cool way to go cause a part of me dislikes Mac and Windows at times.

I am using the solo violas detache, and the expr violas for the longer bow... I'll try your idea and see how it fits. I haven't tried playing with combis yet. I'm still pretty new to scoring orchestral works...

I am too dont worry, that's why i dont want to come off like some know-it-all. we're in this together friend. i never even heard the word detache before the plugin came out. it's not an easy style of music to just jump into i have found.

you're doing great keep at it!

Creepy~!

I think it could use some more reverb, it sounds kind of all over the place tone-wise, reverb and some rebalancing could really tighten it up (especially the choirs and the strings that are present in the opening).

I really like the creepy motif later on with the timpani, and the bells create a cool mental image. Definitely needs a lot more reveb to hold it together - sounds rather GM at the moment, to tell you the truth. The actual composition has a lot of potential to work out really well, though, in my opinion. Sorry I didn't comment on this earlier, I was feeling sad since my own wasn't getting any comments, but I'm glad I listened to this. Thanks for sharing it! :)
