with regard to your reply concerning the dishonesty thing, thank god you are normal, I generaly find it difficult to take seriously people who believe that they are truly honest. I believe you can try to be honest but that its a mistake to think you you will actually get there. Maybe its easier to be honest with the little things but it seems that as the issues get bigger or there is more invested in them then the more malleable honesty becomes. I think that it is an inate part of the human condition to adjust honesty to the circumstances. Think of a situation where we might lie to protect a family member for example. In fact there are circumstances such as this where society generaly might even expect us to lie and be suspicious of us if we did not.
So is it the case with stealing that you are saying that you would find it more difficult to steal than not to steal. The reason I ask is that, if this is the case and you ally that with what you said earlier "those who have the willpower, and personal power not to steal" it seems as though it would be more the case that actually stealing would be the real exercise in willpower for you. Now perhaps there's a challenge for the new year (big wink).

Acme Almanac is having a sales promotion. They want to broaden the public's awareness of their product. To this end, they print 100 coupons which entitle the bearer to a free copy of the upcoming 2006 top-o-the-line Acme Almanac. This is a really nice piece of work - a desirable tome to be sure! They account for the cost of this event (the cost of 100 Almanacs and coupon printing) in their advertising budget. It was a difficult and contentious argument to be sure - but marketing won out over accounting
The latest copy of the Acme Almanac represented the hard work of many people, each of whom felt a well-deserved pride in a product that was clearly the market leader. Like most publishing firms, this company operated on a very narrow margin - success was highly dependant on reaching the sales goals of their latest publication. The substantial investment made by the company hung in the balance.
Some enterprising individual - lets call him "Sparky" - gets one of these coupons and, seeing that it is trivial to reproduce, makes a 1000 more copies. Don't worry - he works at a Kinko's Copy Shop and made the copies on his break. They are perfect copies of the original. Sparky is really proud of himself, he made these copies for "free" - ( Where are the irony police when you need them?
)
Sparky digs being a "hero" and passes out his counterfeit coupons to everyone he meets for the next three days ....
Acme Almanac - being a little new to marketing on this scale - did not realize how easy it was to produce an exact copy of the coupon. Not knowing which coupons were legit and which were counterfeit they are forced to honor all of them. They are also out of business. They did not budget for theft of this kind. Their employees are sent home - never to return.
Sparky, seeing the result of his thievery, rationalizes Acme's downfall as the result of an evil corporate structure filled with employee abuse and greedy mis-management of funds. According to Sparky, they deserved exactly what they got.
Clear enough??

John and Jane each want to buy a new car, and they both think that one of the new Acme Dashers might be a good car. They go to the Acme Car Sale shop and look around and talk to a few representatives. The representatives, of course, want to immediately sell them Acme Dashers. They refuse, because they doesn't know if the car will suit them yet. Seeing that they are very likely customers, they allow them to drive a Dasher for two days at a ridiculously low rent price. John drives the Dasher home, and drives around in it, and feels that it is a great car, so two days later he returns to the car shop and instantly buys one. Jane, however, finds that the seats are too uncomfortable, and returns it the next day and drives her old car. Of two potential customers, Acme got an order from one. Although the other one got to try a new Dasher, Acme didn't lose any money over this, and they also didn't lose any money from having John try the Dasher first and getting paid two days later. Had they not offered the test drives, neither John nor Jane would have bought a Dasher.

not really.
I dont see how your neat self serving allegory makes anything clearer. It seems as though it only adds a smug gloss to an oversimplistic view.

so does that mean if a car dealership doesn't offer a demo or a test drive, you can just take any car you want? Say they do have demos, but you dont like the fact you have to call them, or report mileage or some other rule they impose. Can you then decide to just take any car, because they do offer demos so they wont mind, but going through the proper process is a pain?arke wrote:John and Jane each want to buy a new car, and they both think that one of the new Acme Dashers might be a good car.
