I'm a new here, and it seems to me that you guys (users of this forum in general) don't like Computer Music mag.
why is that?

I think many of us have liked it at one time. It just hasn't changed much over the years. I read it every month of its first two years, it still seems kind of similar (despite the many ballyhooed revamps). When things are always aimed beginners, once you no longer are a beginner, they can get a bit dull.

It's like the starting line. But y'know.. when the race begins, you eventually leave it. It introduced me to KvR... now I'm waiting for KvR to do the same ... unfortunately the Dogs on Acid site seems a bit pewp... so... I'm still here....

Computer music seems like it has some genious writers and some absolutely retarded writers.

For instance, it has had some absolutely great articles on things like compression and modular synthesis. However, it has often said some flabberghastingly stupid things. I remember one time they showed how to do the matrix effect (the one where neo's scream centers down to one tone) with a run-of-the-mill bit crusher, and then I read up on the site of the people who did the sound effects for matrix and how they did it wasnt even close to the CM explaination (didnt even concern a bit-crusher if i remember right). Just a lot of stupid stuff like that.

Also their reviews are absolutely worthless. Never trust a review when you see ads for the same product throughout the magazine. Whenever reading their reviews of $600 software, I often find myself thinking "wow, my freeware can do that, except better..."

His name is Croms, and he's one of the nicest guys imaginable. I felt like an absolute prick...
So I carry the attitude of "being open minded" when, for instance, I JUST got recommended to produce on one monitor...
The place is still great though. Like here (or anywhere), you just have to be positive and ignore the morons.

G-Ro124 makes a good point. there was a thread on the CM/FM forum a while ago about how their reviews read more like product spec sheets. rather than give good, objective critique of products, they tend to tell you what you can already read on the product's website.

anyway, i've read CM faithfully for a while now, but i think i'm about done. unless i see they're giving something stellar away (like wusikstation) i don't plan on buying it anymore. i don't need a 3 issue series on how to produce perfect trance or 28 pages of DNB tutorials. i don't even listen to that stuff, and definitely don't make it.

the feature i always read first and often got the most out of was rachMiel's "soundings" column, which got progressively shorter and shorter. then i realized he's got some writings up at his website. so really, aside from the software giveaways, the mag doesn't hold the appeal for me that it once did.

i will say that the mag is great for newbies. i learned a lot from it and have a HUGE sample collection thanks to them...mind you, i won't use 89% of them but they're there just in case. ;o)

the thing is though that the people into those genres thought that the said articles were absolute atrocities. Tranceaddict production forum were straight-up pissed off about how the production of trance was represented, and DOA was the same way about DOA.

When pendulum (the most popular DnB guys for the last few years) did their contribution to FM, they came back laughing

Either way - between the software, samples, and reading, it is worth way more than they charge for it. Definately good for the money.

? nothing wrong with CM

like mentioned before it is a starting point thing.

it is a cool careless package for beginners,
worldwide. that is cool.

well the software that comes with it,
that`s what makes it special.

but also the content is not bad either!
but should be more advanced/more pro,
like mentioned before.
plus, i like the layout, and the "extra wide pages".

but it is too expensive,
to buy it in "local stores"...
outside of the U.K.

for me it is one of the best music-mags.

It is far too expensive in Australia - $20!! I buy it now and again when there's some good software in there eg. the BFD demo was worthwhile.

Are you seriously that ignorantly blind? Ever wonder why they almost never mention freeware? You're their favorite kind of customer...

CM absolutely blows up every product they review. I would know because I;ve worked with most of them.

I do, and your answer is a misguided answer. There are several freeware things about that I prefer using over things I've paid for.
