fake: How are you finding dssi-vst for performance? I tried it a while back but was getting bad delays and really high CPU usage. I tested native synths and the sound card driver latency was pretty low, so I don't think it was the audio setup I was using.

window, mouse and keyboard handling is (very) different on linux and osx (X11/xlib versus carbon framework). but yes, the midi/audio part is just a matter of a shared libray file (.dylib)

You probably already know this but OSX does ship with a working xserver. As an interim you could always state that as a requirement.

I do however realise that it is up to you as it would increase you (already heavy) workload. My main reasons behind wanting an OSX version is because my friends could use it too and I could play with it at work on my laptop.

Just compiled the latest kernel and it supports my on-board ethernet now.

Ready for that linux beta when you are jorgen...

Here I am, surfing in on my fresh UBUNTU Live CD! It got my ethernet and wireless working, I have audio and 1920x1200 on my laptop display. Who could ask for more? I think I'm gonna have to give the installer a whirl a bit later, this is very slick indeed.

I still remember when I was just starting with Linux. I had to manually compile and configure module for "winmodem" and... I succeeded. This wasn't that easy for me then but it was feeling great when I finally could use something different than windows. Now thanks to ext2 I will able to use just Linux for all my needs. I cann't wait!

Those were indeed the days, which is why I gave up when I realised there were no applications for several key things I use a PC for. Now I am seriously comtemplating a complete break with Windoze [pun intended] for most everything. It would even be worth ditching WaspXT just to make a clean start with eXT for audio, Xara Xtreme and GIMP for all my graphics and Toxik for work. I'd only need Windoze for SynthEdit stuff and I'm all but over that these days anyway. All I really need are drivers for my Edirol USB audio devices, which are currently not supported AFAIK.

Will there be a performance gain/loss on linux? It'd depend on how well you optimise linux, but will an optimised linux distro run better than an optimised windows?

Wow - these are big statements coming from you.

Tell me - have you managed to reproduce the whole XP internet browsing experience on Ubuntu? I have trouble with streaming video. I've managed to sort of get RealNetworks format now - but it isn't a fantastically browser-integrated experience. I have severe trouble with WMV etc... and basically all the rest.

The Totem player seems to suck arseholes for me, but there just may not be a few fundamental things I haven't set up properly.

I loaded Suse 10 on my machine a few days ago and love it. My soundcard isn't supported, though. I'm thinking of switching to a card that does or maybe just using the onboard card. I was able to load MANY VSTs via Wine and get them to load and even tried eXT and it worked! It's strange looking because it looks like a text based app. It didn't find the ASIO driver, of course, but all the modules would load (arp, seq, etc.). So, now I do all my web stuff with Suse and have shut my TCP/IP stuff off in WinXP to save a bit of RAM and PROC.

It certainly is fun to play around with.

I've become quite a convert! First I dumped my Apple and now I'm geeked about Linux, again.

What would be the point of running Linux on a Intel/Mac? I don't see any benefit. You could buy a cheaper PC.

Hi, to be honest I don't seem to suffer from any latency problems with vst's in wine. I am running an maudio 24/96 card at 48000Hz with 5.2 ms latency in realtime mode. The most vsti I have had running at once is 8 and still no problems even with the cpu usage. I suppose it also depends on the vst being used and how well it has been coded, it also helps to have a fast harddrive.

Using dssi was a simple install affair, no problems with dependencies etc. Probably why I like DeMuDi so much is the debian/synaptic package manager which makes installs easy.

Glad you got the ethernet working now.

XT on linux would be great, at the present time
it doesn't work on wine hq (tested on my FC4)
(I mean all the previous screens are fake or it's true ?)
