? nothing wrong with CM

like mentioned before it is a starting point thing.

it is a cool careless package for beginners,
worldwide. that is cool.

well the software that comes with it,
that`s what makes it special.

but also the content is not bad either!
but should be more advanced/more pro,
like mentioned before.
plus, i like the layout, and the "extra wide pages".

but it is too expensive,
to buy it in "local stores"...
outside of the U.K.

Funny I agree... almost. It should be the best mag out there; the concept and focus is perfect and undiluted. Unfortunately, the execution falls short.

When it does an article on compressors for instance, they use page after page of screen shots. How interesting is the process of turning a virtual knob? If you distilled those pages of photos to just text, you'd have almost nothing.

The giveaways are nice, provided it fills a niche you havent already covered.

i dont have a problem with it and I think its a decent mag. All ad driven music mags are the same when it comes to reviews.

I wasn't so excited when it first came out as the content seemed really basic and also I thought it would create an influx of wannabes who wanted to 'make phat techn0 beats on their 486 and desktop speakers' (it did ), but I guess I'm a bit of a wannabe myself as I've never had my face plastered in a magazine. Anyway, as far as that... far worse is the influx of hiphop kids and all these lame 'fresh dope beats from da streets' hiphop sample sites. Should've known that when that stuff started popping up on ebay that websites would follow. Guess I should've cashed in myself. Doesn't take much talent to create a flashy website, zip up a few dozen overprocessed drum samples and call em "TimboDreCashBucksPhat Beats Pack Vol 1" and charge $40.

Whenever reading their reviews of $600 software, I often find myself thinking "wow, my freeware can do that, except better..."

You have GOT to be kidding me! Obviously you do not have much experience dealing with any other software than freeware.

ive seen stuff from krakli,odo,ones and many others in there.
im a subscriber(my missus bought me a subscription a few years back and she just keeps renewing it) and yep while not every issue has something for me tese days a lot do.
for instance those of you who havent read it wont know rachmiel has a series about experimentalism

plus yep for a beginner where else are you gonna get that kinda bundle of samples at that price each month

But it is easy to hear when somebody tries to do that,
even more so if they come from a rock background.

It was a good read when I first started on a pc but I always though they were a little redundant on some stuff. I got a lot of samples from them to start also.

Hmmm... Well I love Computer Music Magazine. It's my favorite music magazine of the five I subscribe to. It's like getting a present in the mail every month, Yippee!:P. I enjoy the pictures too, it's a great looking magazine, and there's no better way to learn from a magazine than from text and pictures, they also have tutorials on their DVD, samples, mp3's, freeware, demo's, even their own free software and plug-ins (sequencer ((Sounds like they might be trying to get an even better one in the near future)), sampler, virtual instruments, drums, effects). Really great magazine.

Yeah, there are other good magazine's that are more serious reading all around, but CM is by far the funnest!

I do, and your answer is a misguided answer. There are several freeware things about that I prefer using over things I've paid for.

I am an Audio Engineer for almost 20 Years.
And from Time to time i read CM, just to see if tey come up with something new.
About Freeware: Yes there is very good Freeware out there. And there might be even freeware thats better, then the once you paid for. But in general this is the Exception. If you say there is Audio Software which is highly overpriced, i would also agree. On the other hand, to say CM Software is better than most, is simply not true and shows a lack of knowledge.

Oh, I would never say that, I don't even buy the magazine anymore to get the freebies. But, with the one big exception being Ohmygod. For what it is, it is as good anything in its field.

Most Chapters and Indigo stores in Toronto carry it. Not sure out Burlington/Hamilton way, though. If you ever get downtown, Pages on Queen St West at John (across the street from the ChumCity building) almost always has a copy. Be forewarned, it is $20.

I really like CM as a magazine, and have bought every issue for about four years now. That said, ... I'm careful not to fully trust the reviews.

Firstly, they are often hyped up, and offer more praise than is strictly deserved.

But also, they seem inconsistent. For example, in their scores they awarded ProTools and Cubase SX3 8/10, Logic 7, Live 5, Reason 3, Sonar 5 and FL5 9/10... and Tracktion 2 the full 10/10.

Okay, so they are taking value for money into consideration of course... but even so this is obviously nonsense!

The really interesting thing though is that since giving T2 10/10 they have barely mentioned it. They have offered tutorials in just about every 8/10 and 9/10 sequencer out there, but studiously avoided their only 10/10 nomination! The implication is that they have had second thoughts and regret hyping up Tracktion so much (and quite understandable, considering the problems some people have had with it) but even so... hyping stuff up and then dropping it moments later doesn't inspire much confidence with this reader!
