Live performances can taint it for me. I mean, I saw Kasabian at the Hyde Park festival last summer (Don't worry, I was working there, I didn't pay!) and they were f**king amazing.

But their album is shite!

exactly. My percentage for live music would be WAY higher.

Man, I just like the music I like. Commerciality doesn't come into it. I wont NOT like something just because it made/makes money. That's a really stupid thing. Likewise I wont like something just because no one ever heard of it. That's a stupid reason to like music too.

I'm equally at home listening to Papa Roach as I am listening to Autechre as I am listening to Frank Zappa as I am listening to Tool as I am listening to the Conan The Barbarian soundtrack.

Why limit yourself in bigotted ways like the ones I mentioned? The only limit on music should be if it moves you or not. If it doesn't move you... then don't listen to it.
Agreed. I like plenty of commercial music too.. Like some Michael Jackson, The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim (some tunes), Snoop Doggs early stuff, and some others..
But the real reason the majors woulda signed these guys would be for some kinda attitude/gimick/hook or stage presence they had. I dont think I could ever be signed by the majors nor would I want to. Id rather live the poor life (in my nice town) thankyou very much..

It is good that you jump up and down on them so, with a great roaring sound.

Because I like the trippin, off the rippin.
The game of the flame.
I've got no reason to blame
I forfeit a reason just for fun.
My computer is better then yours,
and the DAW you use are for whores.
I like to substitute my inability to contribute with capital letters and selective logic.
I fail to see the bigger picture and consider myself demagogic.

So fukc you all, I'm the better person.
I'm the better musician, acknowledge my superiority and your own inferiority.

Ohh it sounds so good when I rap silently in my head, you should hear it sometime!

Might as well of put that as the only answer choice.
Or at least let people choose what they want but then have that be the category that the vote actually gets added to...

I'm familiar with a rip off but rip on :?
Sorry.

To 'rip on' something is Middle American slang for saying negative things about something just for the sheer fun of it.

Must be a largely American thing then 'cause I've got better things too worry about :? .

I dont get why people feel the need to point out that they have a very eclectic taste in music (whether they do or not - though most who say they do list what they listen to "from [genre 1] to [Genre 2]", when the 2 said musical genres arent much different from eachother). Personally, I will admit that i infact have a very narrow taste in music. So what? If you were as open minded as you're trying to make people think you are by saying so, you would also have an equally wide-banded taste in fashion, visual art, cars, favorite animals, movies, the list goes on...

I strongly suspect that artists like Autechre are more about sounding cultured by saying that you listen to them than the music itself actually being any good, which is usually noodling bollocks.

I think it's the dance music equivalent of "challenging" art. By saying you get it, you enter an exclusive little club which excludes the proles, which is an end in itself. :)

Then again, maybe it's just because I was disappointed by Tri Repetae after buying it after it was hyped to the moon online.

Gotta give them one thing, though - they're damn good at names of themselves, albums and tracks.

So I take it you go for option 5?

I think I understand IDM, but like most dance music, Sturgeon's Law applies: 95% of it is crap. Autechre fall into the 95% category for me, and I don't know why they're rated so highly, so I try to rationalise it in terms of what I know about people. It could well be that my taste is only in my mouth, and that you're right.

The assumption is an interesting one, though; that if you understood it, you'd like it. I think it's quite possible to understand stuff you don't like, and resent them all the more for it! For me it's "bog prog" progressive - I get what it's trying to do and what it stands for, but I still don't like it. In fact, I hate hate hate it all the more for what it stands for! GRRR. :)

If there was a "I have an allergic reaction to pretension and chinstroking" I'd probably go for that (yes, I'm aware of the irony, and yes I'm a hypocrite). :)

If narrowmindedness (err sorry, did you say narrow taste) is working for you.. then more power to ya..

but I dont see how you can tie one's taste in music with their tastes material goods.. ??

'oh so you listen to a lot of DNB, so you must really love mercedes benz, green shirts, and jello(tm) brand chocolate pudding.' ???

a taste for a broad range in music can help you understand others if only slightly.. and open your ideas to other ways of thinking.. loving a mass marketed chocolate dessert probably wont.. ?
