The really interesting thing though is that since giving T2 10/10 they have barely mentioned it. They have offered tutorials in just about every 8/10 and 9/10 sequencer out there, but studiously avoided their only 10/10 nomination! The implication is that they have had second thoughts and regret hyping up Tracktion so much (and quite understandable, considering the problems some people have had with it) but even so... hyping stuff up and then dropping it moments later doesn't inspire much confidence with this reader!

That's one possible reason.

Another is that Tracktion may not require as detailed of a tutorial as the other sequencers.

Lastly, another reason is that they have to sell to an established user base. Tracktion simply doesn't have nearly the large sized user base as Cubase or Sonar or probably even Logic.

I think it's a stretch to say that they don't like Tracktion any longer because they haven't had a recent tutorial for it.

Yet they had several tutorials for it prior to version 2 (I can remember quite a few tutorials specific to Tracktion, as well as lots of screenshots of Tracktion thrown into other tutorials (e.g. tutorials for a synth such as Alpha, but showing it hosted within Tracktion.)

Also it would be out of keeping with their usual policy to NOT include tutorials, having given such a great review. They have in recent months featured tutorials for far less popular/mainstream products, including MAX/MSP, Project 5, and energyXT.

And lastly, they still carry a demo of Tracktion on the coverdisk, so it should remain a natural choice for them toi highlight, being as it's included with the magazine

Yeah I agree, so I don't want to overstate the case! The main point is that the original review was hopelessly hyped. It's daft to give it a better review than Logic, Sonar, ProTools, etc, even if it is cheaper! Music Tech Magazine made the same error (imho) as did Future Music. Thankfully Sound on Sound - which CAN be trusted to give balanced reviews in general - gave a senseible review of T2 which was actually a useful read for prospective T2 customers (given that it highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the product, including mentioning the bugs).

But aside from taking the reviews with a pinch of salt, I still really enjoy reading CM each month. It reports on a lot of more experimental stuff and independant developers much more than any of *the others*

Most Chapters and Indigo stores in Toronto carry it. Not sure out Burlington/Hamilton way, though. If you ever get downtown, Pages on Queen St West at John (across the street from the ChumCity building) almost always has a copy. Be forewarned, it is $20.

I get that impression too sometimes. The articles can be so elementary that they are unnecessary for anyone who owns the actual documentation.

But it occurs to me that they make their business on advertising. If Steinberg, logic, et al thought that was going on, there'd be a major backlash.

Great for beginners but after a few years it just becomes repetative.
The dvd was a bad idea, made it seem modern but not as a lot of stuff on it is just a rehash of previous 16 bit samples but now 24 bit.

I also hate the "you can sound like" articles. Sorry I DON'T want to sound the same as someone else. I don't care how they got that bassline. By doing that they just standardise the music in line with the music bizz so everybody has a similar sound. The sound of commercialism without any original idea/thought.

Save the money a buy a decent book.

The "sound like" column is just plain bad. At best it allows you to sound sort of like the artist, but doesn't actually identify the techniques the artist used correctly.

One time they did one of those articles about the Strokes, and misidentified a very saturated guitar part as being some monosynth patch. Yikes, not even close. By coincidence around the same time a guitar magazine interviwed the band's guitarists and got the correct info.

I should probably elaborate a bit. It just seems a bit odd that they don't use the entry-level versions of the sequencers in these articles more often.

Like, is it necessary to use Cubase SX3 or Logic for a tutorial, when someone who's just started out is far more likely (assuming no naughtiness has gone on) to have the SE or LE version that came bundled with their soundcard. It must be pretty annoying to get halfway through the tutorial and find your sequencer doesn't include everything mentioned...

It's probably nothing so sinister as all that though. It's most likely just a general not-being-arsed with installing a different package just to knock together a thousand words...

Whenever reading their reviews of $600 software, I often find myself thinking "wow, my freeware can do that, except better..."

You have GOT to be kidding me! Obviously you do not have much experience dealing with any other software than freeware.

ive seen stuff from krakli,odo,ones and many others in there.
im a subscriber(my missus bought me a subscription a few years back and she just keeps renewing it) and yep while not every issue has something for me tese days a lot do.
for instance those of you who havent read it wont know rachmiel has a series about experimentalism

plus yep for a beginner where else are you gonna get that kinda bundle of samples at that price each month

Vurt, the only freebies outside of Odo's (and apparently krakli's? i must of missed that one) that i have seen in CM are from the companies who other commercial products they blow up...
