I just downloaded some of the mp3 mixes from DogsOnAcid ...
Not being a huge drum and bass officiando I thought I'd give it a bit of a listen.
So far it's been two hours of largely the same kick/snare type combo's on more or less every track.
Alot of the arrangements are very good.
The core or fundamental underpinning rytmich base is still kicks on 1 and 11 and snares on 5 and 13 with subtle variations there of.
I like alot of the basswork / builds etc but as a so called genre it's all terribly samey.
Which got me thinking or at least wondering with any so called genre and ensuing music clique ....how do people marginalise themselves so much with regards to the music they compose and or listen too ?
I'm not having a dig at D'n'B here as the same can be leveled at pretty much any genre with a "scene" and thriving community.
I could happily listen too this stuff alongside anything else I listen to but I cannot for the love of God just listen or favour one style of music only.
I have a pretty varied music collection.
Well infact it's damn varied from classical to idm and everything in between and then some.
Has the electronic music scene really become this fractured , fragmented and splintered?
Pretty sad really if it has .
Sorry I'm late 30's now and due to health issues really don't get out at all.
As I can appreciate this stuff as much as I can say Grieg or MilesDavis or Zappa or Leonard Cohen , Laurie Anderson , jazz (both modern and trad , blues , techno , triphop , punk , ambient etc etc etc ...
Ok "country & western" is a bit of a stretch even for me :hihi: but you get my drift.

You could say the same about hip hop. Man they have an easy time the producer's. 1 drum loop going all the way through the song, 1 riff sampled from anything... if you're lucky you'll get a string sound later... and lot's af rabble about how much money and beeatches he has and how hard he is he he ....

I wouldn't call the DnB scene electronic though. There is good and bad in all genres, you might have got unlucky... or heard the same Amen Drum loops sampled for the thousanth time :) I really like John B's DnB it really is electronic.

I wonder what the new style of dance music will be?

For the most part, yes. For DJs, homogenous sets sound cohesive without work, are easy to mix, and if they've settled on a genre you know your audience likes, there's little risk of turning them off. It also makes shopping for new tracks much easier, and buys into ideas of "my favourite genre is superior to all others" which a lot of DJs and punters harbour.

The downsides are that the DJ can bore everyone to death, that you miss out on a hell of a lot of good music from other genres, and the dance music scene ends up very narrowminded and fragmented.

More fairly, there are significant barriers put up by BPM. It's difficult to mix 170 bpm into 134 bpm....to help this sort of thing, more "DJ Tools" vinyl like that released by Kniteforce Records (which features bridging tracks which span the bpm divide) should exist and get used, IMO.
Pretty sad really if it has.
Yes...I think it's like different denominations of christianity; they have so much in common that they hate one another for what differences there are.

I view it like this, saying electronic music is like saying guitar music, or trumpet music, or drum music. The instrument might be the same, but the intent and the function are all different.

But the overdone classification does get a bit much. Why, just as I was typing five new subgenres of trance were invented by some guy who decided to change the BPM.

Me too. The youngest seem to be 2-step garage, nu skool breaks, hardhouse, hardstyle and electroclash electro. That might provide some clues.

Every single genre will have a massive amount of simularly generic content, especially if you just scrape the top off of a fanboy site like DOA...

Listen to Vurt music.

You'll. Feel. Better.

I go to here http://dnbforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=7 every so often and download a bunch of mixes of the supposed "best set ever." But i have yet to hear anything that comes even close to "the best", whatever that is. At least the kids are enthusiastic.

My latest flavour of the month: microhouse.
Mmmmm, glitch.

Man, the music and scene's what you make of it. I have a gig tonight, I'll be playing house(all kinds of sub-genres), hiphop, triphop, acid jazz, soul, funk and a little microhouse to top it off.

What and who defines Microhouse? I have heard the term, but it sounded so gay i didn't look into it, but i'm bored, so i'll ask now. :P

So close, but no cigar....if you'd said "and a little speedcore to top it off", you could have been a hero. :)

We don't need another hero

It's a genre that was started by a track based on sampled body noises, go figure! Instead of emphasis on big thumping kick drum and big thumping bass like most house, the kick is weaker, and there's glitch. But it's danceable, and kinda groovy, unlike most IDM. Um. That's it so far as I can see, really.

Spot on.

I've always liked some other glitch (mostly techno, some so-called IDM), but this shit is the only glitch that really makes me want to move.
