Linux EXT?

I loaded Suse 10 on my machine a few days ago and love it. My soundcard isn't supported, though. I'm thinking of switching to a card that does or maybe just using the onboard card.

I think that is a valid attitude even though I suppose it is something I regularly berate Mac users for. I'd rather go out and buy new hardware that is supported by Linux than pay for an OS [Windoze] simply because my current hardware is supported. For me that might mean getting a different audio device or just using on-board audio until my Edirol gear is supported. I really only need low latency for live shows.

Linux has run on Mac's for ages. Jus tlook for any "LinuxPPC" distro. SUSE do one and I'm sure there are plenty of others.

The Totem player seems to suck arseholes for me, but there just may not be a few fundamental things I haven't set up properly.

The trick to getting Totem to work is these two steps:

1. Install totem-xine. If you use Ubuntu, look in Synaptics for it. You might have to enable the universe repository.

2. Install the w32codecs pack.

If you don't use Ubuntu, then you might have to do a little adjusting to suit your distro.

After doing those two things, Totem is awesome. It plays everything I've thrown at it since. I also use it in Fedora4 and it works just as well there (used same instructions).

As far as browser streaming, I don't know if the above helps much. I don't use it much and thus don't care. Try it and see.

Thanks for the advice about Totem. I've installed it and the win 32 codecs before and it still sucks, but maybe there was something wrong with the install or something.

I'll read that link you gave me and go through it all again. If it works well, then I can spend more time in Linux, which I'm wanting to do at the moment.

What would be the point of running Linux on a Intel/Mac? I don't see any benefit. You could buy a cheaper PC.

I did read it. What's the point? You said, "Will the Linux version run on Intel/Mac". Why would it unless it's running Linux? It would also mean that you'd buy a laptop and it comes with Apple's OS which is based on BSD. Linux and BSD aren't interchangeable. Why would you think it would work?

Maybe you should ask, "Are there any plans for an Apple version?" Which I would say is just fcuking dumb.

Aparently he's not wanting to run Linux on the Mac, he wants to know if it would work on the Mac "as is".

Hey there, I'am the project leader of www.jacklab.net ( www.opensuse.org/JackLab ) which aims to have a really easy to use AudioDistri based on openSUSE. I mainly use my SuSE Linux for music production, but i have a small partition with xp for energy xt, because i really love this host.

One of our focus is to run wrapped VST plugins on Linux as jackclients, so we just released libfst 1.7 with an easy to use fst-demo with some plugins. (we using apt4rpm for distribution)

As far as i know there two vst plugins are open source so we will build and release them as native linux vst plugin soon.

I need more information of ext2 for linux, because this will be e really revolution for linuxaudio and i am longing for a good commercial sequenzer (ardour is fine but audio only, muse is just a crap on suse and rosegarden4 is in many things a joke)

Working hard on a preview version so that devs can start coding and testing native linux vst in xt2 before the initial release.

EDIT- just saw some suze screnshoots, looks good, i like that green that its associated to Suse , don´t know if its the default theme, or if linux have default themes like in windows) , i just like what i saw, do you know if i can run suze on a 500 mhz pc with 32 ram? i have win98se, and if it runs like win98 on this machine maybe i woul d try, but if its heavier.. no way..
EDIT- mmm , read that comes with other open sources programs , firefox, openoffice, gimp ... and i know this programs are "heavy" on this machine ..so i better not try it... thanks .. i will try on my other machine whem im ready to leave windows away..

openSUSE 10.0 is distributed on 5 CDs, but the openSUSE JackLab Audio Distribution will be based on SUPER minimal, so this will be only 1 CD with a special audio kernel, lots of audioapps and a minimal Windowmanager (my favorite is e17, www.get-e.org). The openSUSE JAD will be fully compatible to the main openSUSE distri, so it is easy to expand it via APT.

The base install usually fits on one CD. You'll need other CDs for extra software, docs, themes, and so on. You can download these, too. On Suse, you can use a tool called YAST for this.

You can use any theme and desktop environment you like.
Here are the most common ones:

Xfce, Fvwm and blackbox/fluxbox are the lighter ones.
You can definately run linux on the configuration you mentioned, but it'll be too low on memory to make a graphical desktop run smoothly (and you can be fairly sure KDE and Gnome won't run at all). 128 MB should work, but 256 is the minimum for doing anything usefull (run Firefox or OpenOffice.org for example, or make music).

i have win98se, and if it runs like win98 on this machine maybe i woul d try, but if its heavier.. no way..

Actually, I'm surprised Win98 runs at all, at 32 MB. More is better, even for older versions of Windows.

Thats nice and I will be one of the first who be testing it. But my main question is: Will ext2 use the JACK Audio Server for lowlatency and easy I/O to other audioapps (eg zynAddSubFx, jamin and other great JACK apps?) Without JACK support ext2 for Linux will not have any chance
And: will my ext licence for 1.x still be valid on the ext2 for linux? Otherwise I think, you should make an unlimited beta for testing purposes, because there will be a lot to do.

But I think I will contact you via email the next days.

Jorgen has mentioned that the I/O of xt2 will be open sourced, and that currently he is using OSS. So there's no JACK support as of yet, but I don't doubt it will be there. this is a very good style for production machines. Does NOT wear eyes and affects all gtk apps. I suggest one changes desktop background to color only (50, 50, 45) or a vertical gradient.

RME cards are supposed to operate on linux machines.

OSS is not opensource and obsolet for modern linux audio systems

So there's no JACK support as of yet, but I don't doubt it will be there. (maybe you can develop it for the preview version )

As I'am say before - JACK is recommended für lowlatency audio. Without JACK this app will be not interesting for serios audioproducer on Linux, oss is much to slow and there is only a compatibly layer for alsa in the 2.6 Kernel. But yes, maybe someone of our team(I'am not the coder) find some time to make an impelentation of JACK in ext2.

Also, the license will still be valid, it's been covered many times (jorgen is super-awesome )

Thats nice, when I bought ext a mounth before I thought that will be a good investition in the future... :)and not a dead end street like other hosts...
