What's that with the hacked uxtheme.dll? That seems a bit dangerous, or am I to paraniod?

not too paranoid at all. using the *hacked* .dll (oooh scary

) will result in a completely compromised system and you will lose all personal information and will have your bank accounts intruded. Next thing you know is the police knocking at your door.

Right... I've had bblean replace explorer, it's very configurable plus things run fast and Windows XP actually looks great (and flat

).

Now that I started customizing, what advantage would WB bring over bblean?

After installing and removing it i had black text, black windows, black background, no fonts. The complete desktop was completely screwed up.
I had to reconstruct some configuration files manually and it worked again.
On other systems i have noticed instabileties and low performance.

Do not install this!

None. You'd have to go back to using WB-enhanced explorer instead of the sleek bblean. Do you need those halfarsed new WC tranparent/shadowed themes? probably not if you were happy with bblean...

If you want to customise the standard XP look, you're best off just using the patched uxtheme and use the native XP customised themes available. They look pretty much equal to the WB things.

Just be aware that there are a billion themes available and only about 5 of them are really good, and that finding the good ones can be a chore..

Was this with the latest windowblinds? It has been improved dramatically in case you're sharing your early WB experiences..

Thanks Kingston, I'll skip WB then. Atm I actually can't imagine what could be better

I might imagine this, but my system feels more responsive than without bblean... not like this sonoma thingy was sluggish before At least I've gained more screen estate vertically, which is a big bonus on a widescreen laptop.

When I glanced at the title of this thread – I read

Is WINDOWS bad for your computer

Then I noticed the blinds bit – well with the later graphics and cpus I should think its not too much of a problem to run – it used to be. The big problems are from the betas that you could download from within the registered users control panel. Probably best not to use those if they still do that (they were real buggy

)

Tried it, it screwed things up and faild to boot into a gui. I then had to reinstall windows!

I later found out I didn't need to reinstall as the gui setting can be altered back in the win ini file.

All of this fancy stuff impacts on performance to a degree. I tried the uxtheme.dll thing when I first upgraded to XP and kept getting clicks in Tassman. After loads of tweaking to try and fix it I shut down the themes service and reverted to classic and found this cured the clicks and saved quite a lot of CPU in some Tassman patches.

I would like to know if this bblean would be leaner

than the windows shell though and is it compatible with all hosts and VSTi's etc??

aMUSED, I only use eXT but it works (like all other programs) trouble-free with bblean. Blackbox.exe takes 6,6MBs of memory. I haven't yet replaced the native shell completely, I will test things for couple of more days. So far all is good, and like I said earlier things feel faster. This is probably just an illusion as explorer is still running on the backround, but proves that bblean itself is very lean.

Because there's thousands of VS there, here are some good names to start with:

Luna Element (and variants)
Reluna (lots of variants)
Ashen
XPMC
VXP
Souluna
Amarach
Clearlook
Tiger (+ hundreds of other mac variants)
Aerosoft

etc.

Some authors are better than others as you will quickly notice. There aren't an awful lot of the really good ones. Also following the really good authors links and favourites will likely land you a good dozen more styles.

I've settled on using Luna Element 3 in compact mode for quite long time now. Just seems ergonomic.

Is WINDOWS BLINDS BAD for your computer??
