Warwick have the best name, Yamaha is well liked (in high-end models) by many pros. Always found Washburn to be fairly decent in the past but may not have the high-end expertise which gets passed down to base models. With a Warwick you get a high-end design with cheaper components and construction, a bit like the SE PRS guitars which are now so popular.

I purchased a new Warwick Rockbass for about $500+, which I like a lot, because it plays & records well, but there are a few corners cut, and I had to learn to setup the neck and other minor repairs. I researched many basses because there in not much quality in that price range. But the only bass I've found since that made me regret the Rockbass was this Ibanez.

I tried it in the store, thought it played amazing for the price, then saw it in a Bass Player magazine article on the best recently released products.

yoir signature answers your question...;)

yeah, I saw that coming sooner or later :D

I'm looking for an opinion because what I might find great in the shop might turn in a disaster later (or at least a regretful purchase).

I know my way around saxes, but with basses and guitars I might use my eyes more than my ears.

tbh today you can do pretty much anything you like with electronics (check out some of EMG bass circuits). So not trying to sound like a wise guy, feel should be number one....;)

whatever you decide to buy...make sure you play *every* note on the fingerboard first, before buying it. they should all ring clearly. additionally, make sure that the neck shape feels comfortable in your hands and that the strings are easy to fret. a well adjusted bass should be very easy to play, even for someone who's new at playing. (and dont let the salesman tell you otherwise.)

its also a good idea to check out the knobs and wiggle the jack a little bit. nothing should crackle or pop.

as far as tone goes, from those three manufacturers, you'll likely find several different pickup and electronics types, as well as some different woods. as a result, you should get a variety of tones to pick from. so my advice is to just let your ears tell you which one is right for you. everyone has their own views on tone, and since you're the one thats going to be playing the bass, you should pick one that makes you excited to play it. just close your eyes or stare at the amp (to avoid getting distracted by the looks of the bass) and just focus on the sound. see if any one in particular makes you want to play it longer than the others.

I have a Yamaha bass. It's alright. I'd rather have a Fender Jazz Bass though.

I'm playing an old Yamaha bass (and I mean old and neglected by owner) and I'm amazed at how good it sounds and plays. I can't wait to get it set up properly to see what it's capable of.

I find Yamaha is always a safe bet for getting maximum value for your (limited) money.

Do you want Fretless? and how many strings 4, 5?

I have an Ibanez GAXB150

VERY cheap. But I love it. Plays like a dream, great sound. Played a lot of bigger, more expensive basses before I settled on it. It's just great fun to play :D
