I still haven't given up on that much anticipated Mariachi tribute to Merzbow.

My fave genre is Bum n Face which is like Drum n Bass except it has an extra beat every 13th of a note except on a saturday.

Is that a threat or a challenge?

I wasn't trying to be an ass, but it just seemed that he was willing to break down all genres that wer played by bands (jazz, rock, country, pop), but anything electronic or not played by a European or American band casually gets lumped together into genres which in my mind don't even exist. "Ethnic"? Come on now, what kind of crap is that?!

whether we agree with it or not most record stores have "world music" sections where what he called ethnic would be shoved, admittedly once you hit the one rack of world music it does get broke down into countrys, which in reality still isnt sufficient.

i personally gave up on genres years ago when it became too much to remember the differences between one kind of lets pick on trance from another...
"oh i see what your saying theres a difference of .4 bpms between the styles..."

i now only listen to music available in liquid format.

.. i am glad that i stopped listening to electronic music years ago. i even went that far to buy good old vinyl records again, made in the 60´s.
why no more electronic music for me? i am missing the soul of people .. original works and such things.

yes, i know there are people nowadays making electronic music with soul, though i hardly ever hear it.
(and no, i´m not ignorant towards electronic music. i give it tries, but they almost always fail to convince me.)

I guess you're right, I often forget what happens in regular music stores, I haven't been in one for years. Except the occasional walk through Virgin, but then the last time I was in there, they had done a good job of sorting the various lesser-known styles, including a whole section for the likes of "Fantastic Power Ballads In Czech Volume 3!".

dunno where in the world you are but here in manc even the specialist shops genreally will segment the various hard house/trance... and so on even if there is only one artist in the genre and even then he was only experimenting...
but the world music is still lumped as world.
unless you go to a shop that specifically deals in "world music" then you seem faced with the same thing

San Francisco at the moment. But I do most of my shopping at record (vinyl) stores. I guess with the knowledge that a large percentage of their customers are DJ's, the stores would be more likely to categorise better.

But yeah, apart from specialist shops, I do a lot of record shopping at "Hi-Fidelity" type record stores, and I've been to them all around the world. Generally speaking, the staff at these places know a fair bit about the music and have a greater respect for a wide variety - hence they'd be unwilling to lump merengue with khyal.

What and who defines Microhouse? I have heard the term, but it sounded so gay i didn't look into it, but i'm bored, so i'll ask now.
It's a genre that was started by a track based on sampled body noises, go figure! Instead of emphasis on big thumping kick drum and big thumping bass like most house, the kick is weaker, and there's glitch. But it's danceable, and kinda groovy, unlike most IDM. Um. That's it so far as I can see, really.
Ultra minimal house and techno have been around for a while now. That minimaliscious[1] stuff goes back to the early 90s, but I suspect Matthew Herbert has been influenced by the Clicks 'n' Cuts stuff.
Most of his sampling is heavily conceptual, though, usually dealing with the consumption society.
He knows where that funk comes from, by the way- have you heard his bigband traks? Awesome stuff.

Without reading the whole thread I'll just chuck my two penneth worth in:
When has it been any different? The dance music scene, which is only asub-set of electronic music, has always been into compartmentalising everything into stupidly narrow genres. For me that is what makes it all so boring more than anything else. I can listen to the odd trance track and maybe the occasional bit of hard-house and even a minute or two of d'n'b but there is no way in hell I could listen to one or the other for even an hour.
But then I have the same kind of issue with reggae - it makes a nice change-up on an album, instead of the obligatory ballad, but I could never listen to a whole reggae album, its all too samey.
