Hi everyone,
With the release of Panorama 5 we have now completed our Power Suite 5 release. We are quite proud of the way it came out... we will of course continue to keep improving it with further updates, so please keep the feedback coming!

We will be at the PreSonus booth at NAMM in Janurary so feel free to stop by and say hi if you are there!
Thanks for your support!

Sounds great Rob.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, since I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but I think there's something wrong with the compressors in TrackPlug. I get these awful grainy sounds out of it, and it's not even close to smooth sounding.
I mean, maybe this is the desired behaviour for some of the models, but it just sounds strange. And maybe it's a bug. Or maybe I'm just hearing things. Either way, I thought I'd mention it, since the EQ and Gate sections are stellar, and I love the other plugs in the suite.
I'll try to get audio examples to explain what I mean, but that might take a few days. Sorry to dump on you like this without warning.
EDIT: It might be related to the gate and low levels ... the "popping on and off" of the gate. Still checking ...

I'd be curious to hear samples, if it's a clean vs. vintage mode issue, etc. They should be pretty smooth sounding, and our customers generally like the compressors... so I defintely want to help get to the bottom of whatever you're noticing. What's your sample rate, and compressor settings used?

Hi Rob,
Here's a quick example, using a factory preset, so it "should" be a reasonable example:
http://www.climaxmusic.com/download/Pia ... ressed.wav (3.9 MB)
It's a 16-bit .WAV file, at 44.1KHz. The first few seconds has the preset bypassed, the next bit is with the preset processing the piano (the "Natural Grand Piano" from Hypersonic). The meters show less than 10dB of gain reduction from either compressor, but to my ears, it sounds hideous, like the channel is overloading (and not in a harmonically pleasing way). With the EQ out, it still has that problem, so it's clearly related to the compressor action.
Maybe this is how it's supposed to sound? I can't be sure, but this is just NOT a good sound to me. Hopefully you can clear this up.
Thanks,
~MacQ

Hi MacQ, could you also send me the TP preset you used (is it a factory preset)? If it's your own preset, there is a text file with the user presets (installation directory on PC usually /Program Files/Wave Arts/TrackPlug, Application Support/Wave Arts/TrackPlug 5 on Mac) if you wanted to cut and paste the parameters.

My initial impression is that is seems the attack time is set to be fast, if you increase the attack time it might smooth things out significantly, allowing more of the attack transient of the piano through but still reducing the dynamics range so the piano doesn't decay as fast.

Hi Rob,
Yeah, the factory preset is "Piano Pop" ... so it's ostensibly designed for that kind of program material. I think you might be right, as far as the attack time being too short. I don't know, I'm still not sure. It's the "grainy" sound that I'm not fond of ... as if it's bouncing around too much. Is this the intended behaviour? I don't doubt your skill (I really do love this plugin and the others), but I'm really puzzled about this sound. I suppose I'm too used to using things like the 1176 and LA2A on the UAD card, where the settings are far more "mystical" than accurate.
I'm probably being too critical, and I appologize for that, but I just want it to be the best on everything.

I do notice the sort of "breaking up" effect, and I was able to improve the smoothness of the sound quite noticeably by boosting the attack and release somewhat on the first compressor. But we'll look into it some more to make sure that the compression algorithm is behaving as expected.

Hey Rob,
Thanks again for your outstanding support. Great purchase, don't regret it at all.
