Sonar 5: Anybody liking it?

the features of Sonar 5 look so good and useful, specifically the convolution reverb, the Roland Variphrase technology, i understand the fx and the synths are real good, etc, but i see a few of you aren't happy with certain midi features (like piano roll editing) and prefer Cubase...i got Traction 2 which is fine, but i think i would be a lot happier with a more comprehensive DAW platform... the more "built in" features would be better for me, and as embarrassed as i am to admit it, i'd prefer the visual feedback from a mixer-metaphor (i thought my ears were good enough, ya know? but i wanna see those channel strips)...i also do a lot of midi, there's critics of the piano roll features, but other than that there's not much specific info on the Cakewalk site, for example they mention midi FX but don't describe them (i'm thinking note velocity compression ala Logic for example)
so are there any folks that LIKE Sonar 5, any feedback on the features mentioned or positive thoughts on the app? i'm looking around, love to get some more KVR info, good or bad really....
thanks for your time,
rg

If you use the search function try "Sonar" as a keyword.

Haven't tried it but that pattern matrix thing (Live like pattern selection) looks pretty rad.

I tried Sonar 5. Its great in and of itself. The reason I hated it, though, was the Piano Roll. I do like to record alot more with my Oxygen 8 but I still do lots of Piano roll work and sonar just isnt really cutting it. The clip stuff SUCKS
So, I have FL6, and with its pattern slicing, I really don't think I'll be looking at anything else.

There's a nice review by Craig Anderton on Harmony-central's forums, but I'm not registred, so I can't search for it!

I think S 5 is great for tracking. I dont do a whole lot of midi fine editing with a mouse, so I can't really comment on how it is. I use reason if I am going to compose with softsynths, and usually use S5 for acoustic or electric guitar/piano. I then rewire reason in, freeze, copy audio, remove reason and track over it as necesary. I play my parts, quantize as necessary, and use knobs on my keystation to do any mods.
The v-vocal, purespace and other plugs are great, though I like some of the voxengo and Kjaerhus stuff to augment them.

Besides the piano roll (which admittedly may be a taste thing - I know I MUCH prefer FLS' piano roll to Sonar 4 or 5)...
... the other issue that AFAIK hasn't been addressed yet in Sonar5 is the multiple-automation bug (you'll find reference to it in other Sonar threads, here and Cakewalk's site). Personally I expect it'll be fixed soon.

though I just got sonar I so agree, tbh I think part of it is the 3d feel to FL's. Then you have the tools for the PR in FL that are quick. Of course the multiple midi channel in the piano roll tops it all off nicely...dougsyo wrote:Besides the piano roll (which admittedly may be a taste thing - I know I MUCH prefer FLS' piano roll to Sonar 4 or 5)...
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
