The freeware alternatives are there and should always be used as the alternative.
I fully understand that this is the result of much hard work.
Being able to give back and help drive future work and development is a healthy and fruitful thing.

I was reading this thread backwards just now, and read about complaints on price.

So I gathered it must be $300-$400 estimate when reading comments.

But $198, come on?

The guys have to make a living too, and not to mention the part of society(or nonsociety) which never hesitates to get a cracked copy must be paid by paying users.

Sacrifice a couple of night on the town, and get something that gives many years to your life

Hi Torben, Congrats on the new addition! (Sorry, no pun intended) PS. I responded to your PM last night...hope you got it.

Not even that much. To quote Torben's first post in this thread:

"the price is only $158.00, until February 3, 2006."

Now that this seems to become a "Hi everybody!" of the Spectra sound designers I decided to join the unofficial meeting. ;-)
I designed some cool sounds for this new synth and want to share some thoughts, too.
First: I like the GUI. Fresh and tasty while easy on the eye. And here one of the main principles of Spectra shows up quickly: This is not the next synth with 5 million features that will take you away from your music for 2 weeks because you wanna know it ALL and try to understand the manual to see how it's all done. This one is made to get you going with your music. Sure there's a balance between simplicity and possibilities but I think that Spectra does that in a way that will work for lots of musicians.

This said: I had some question marks at first! Just because I'm a tweaker! I love huge synths! But when I decided to become a friend of this "easy-page" concept I really started to like it. Why? Because it IS easy to use and it sounds really GOOD!!! Spectra sounds very pure because there is NO ALIASING! When you dialed in a certain sound it simply works because you don't get any unwanted artifacts. This made sound design a breeze. Not having to ship around certain insufficencies while creating sounds is very refreshing.

The simplicity of Spectra's usability shouldn't make you think that this is a one trick pony: It's not! This is a Wavetable-Resynthesis-Morph-Additive-Substractive Synth with a well chosen set of parameters on a few easy to use pages.

Did I say that it sounds good? Very versatile and it's simple to use but can reach quite some complexity if you want to. I would like to share some audios but I want to wait until Torben gives us an OK for that. :-)

If you want lotsa sound quality in an easy to tweak package: This might be your next dream synth.

All the best, FRitz

P.S. It's fairly low on the CPU, very nice.
In the end will be the word.

I'd be very happy if Torben posted some sound examples of this synth :hyper:

It's nice to see that developers actually ARE bringing new and innovative synths on the market :)

Spectra is an awesome synth, for sure. People experienced with additive will enjoy the speed with which they can program and get their ideas out. Newcomers to additive will appreciate the simplicity and ease of use. Everybody will enjoy the sound quality and the visual appeal of the interface.

Echoing what some others have said, this isn't a synth with a feature list a mile long - it wasn't built to make a spec sheet look impressive, it was built to make your tracks sound impressive.

Will there be a demo available for d'load at all?
I've demoed WNA's Additive and Cameleon ( a mate has Cube but its a tad complex IMHO though the options are nice) and Dopplemangler is more an extreme mangle machine than a str8 resynthesis unit w/additive features.
So far WNA's Additive is doing it for me and is what I intend to save for.
Good, great ease of use vs great results etc etc .
Cameleon is lovely but I prefered WNA's sound and overall simplicity of interface.
If this sits somewhere in between I'm quite willing to save for 6 odd months to get it instead so a demo of sorts or some mp3's of patches and the like would be greatly appreciated.

I have absolutely no objections to this synth being priced at this price point.
Quality costs money.
No it doesn't. EnergyXT is $40 or so. GreenOak Crystal is free.

What you should be saying is that its worth the high price, which is a different statement.

I've always been happy with my products from Torben. I bought the Golden Bundle, and I use them all the time - best compressor, EQ, and soft limiter around.

Well perhaps I could have worded myself better I guess ?
However I don't use EnergyXT and I am actually not a big fan of Crystal even if it is free to be honest.
I'd take Ugo's Motion 2.8 over Crystal anyday of the week.
Which just goes to show how variable ones view of quality is from person too person.

I still would not classify this synth as being overpriced myself.
Torben & Co seem to produce great products though I only use the amazingly good freeware bundle at the moment.

As a general rule though quality costs and there always will be exceptions .
Perhaps that rule is more pertinent in hardware land when it comes to monitors , sound cards , audio interfaces , midi controllers and the like than it is software in general ?

However picking up a small section of a large post of mine and arguing semantics is hardly doing anybody any favours .

Especially when you comrehend the intent and content.
(Atleast you comprehend it well enough to correct me on it).

Or are the comprehension police becoming extra anal around these parts?

I suppose I'd better just keep my cake hole shut from now on then :( .

Yeah that and your other hole too...

is what others might say.

But I agree that there are some ppl out there who feel that anything other than delivered-to-their-door-free is poor value. I give away some free synths and fx but it is amazing how few ppl actually have the courtesy to email me to say thanks or anything.

If you are going to use something enough then it is worth it to you; if not then it isn't worth it TO YOU.

The basic rule in sales is that the moment a customer sees $1 more in value than the asking price then they will buy. So perhaps spend time enought to see if it is for you or not.

I for one am interested based on the strength of their Classic plugs for usability and directness.

WTF was that for Benedict ?
Sorry I don't find that funny.
I'll give you all the meds I'm on everday for a week and see how amusing you start finding things.
Trust me you'd loose your sense of humour fast. :(
Sorry I just think that was uncalled for by in large.
And I have suggested your Cosmo 201 to various people for a good bass and pad synth and for the fact that it is rather excellent at generating great electronic purcussive sounds for Impulse kits in Live etc ..
Unlike Bones I still think it sounds closer too a real CZ than most emu's even if it doesn't have the original CZ mutlistage envelopes (which is a limit of SynthEdit itself).
Either I'm highly sensitive at the moment due to health issues etc or I'm finding some comments made around here lately rather offensive.
And NO I'm not talking about offensive in context to me ...just offensive in general.
Or is everybody on their festive season rags ?

Post

I didn't mean it like that Fax. I know you from the Ableton forum, and you've always posted decent enough information and helped people out. I was merely questioning the semantics not only for clarification between the two of us, but also for other people. Comments in this thread can very well help people decide if they want this synth or not.

I'm not so sure that it's not overpriced, what with the legions of synths around today that do similar or exactly the same sort of thing. It's just helpful to bear in mind that whilst price does sometimes guarantee quality, it's fast becoming a rule that isn't that dominatory anymore.

I mean, take a look at hardware - you can get an Audiophile for under £150 nowadays (150 when I bought it years ago) and that is a very good card that suits most applications. The same with software from HG Fortune (his synths easily rival Absynth for example) and Krakli (very good freeware)

It would take a lot for me to buy this synth, even though my other products from Kjaerhus.

I would refute the comment that me questioning what you said hardly does anybody favours - it could very well save them some money that don't neccesarily need to spend.

I'm sorry to hear you have health problems, hope its nothing too seriously.

But please Roderick, relax a little. I nor Benedict was trying to be offensive.

Sorry guys I'm not having a very good day and for what it's worth  and I have major surgery at the end of this week and I'm feeling a tad stressed.
That and my meds where changed (one of them causes psyche disturbances for the first few weeks) so I'm a little all over the place right now :(.
I apologise ... I just don't know how to take people at the moment.
Be that on the net or in the realworld.
My whole sleep state (subconcious and waking state have felt like one big blur this last 5 days or so).
All I wanna do is sleep and I've got chronic insomnia it's hideous.
(I can't believe people actually pay money to take pills to willingly feel this way :? ...I don't even drink let alone anything else).
