99% of my software is free, because I didn´t want to spend another lifetime and another fortune on stuff that I already got together in analoge form in my studio ! And I never felt as happy as now ! Amazing quality ! Of course there will be better stuff, but I´m sure it won´t make my music any better !
Holly shite ! I even sound serious, I hope this is only temporal !

Is freeware powerfull enough to make good music?
We'll if want to be ahead of the pack just like the beatles it will cost big money.
man
But, if you just want to make good music - yes freeware is good enough. Some freeware is just as good or even better than the commercial stuff, and there is so much of it.
Though, I do think you might find you need to spend a little bit. Whith sample's you might need to purchase.
I was wondering by how much I would be left behind when the new generation of computers take over whith the 64bit or higher quality sound. Would it realy matter, would you hear the difference that dramaticaly?

@Rangtangtang - what will cost big money exacty? New studio setup or the massive advertising campaign?
Regarding that posts about samples I need to say that often the difference is that you just need to work some more with freeware samples to get the same result. The quality is at your fingertips IMO

The Beatles did most of their work on a rather hissy 3-track deck, just like everybody else at the time.Rangtangtang wrote: We'll if want to be ahead of the pack just like the beatles it will cost big money.man
What they had, that you do not have, is a musical style that hasn't yet been exploited and brought to mass media. If you *do* have that, you don't really need higher fidelity than consumer recoders. With original enough stuff, and the right timing, all you need is a bookstore/coffeeshop gig and your revolutionary new style can be discovered.

yes, of course ... anything is possible.
many free stuff is sooo good these days
that it works great for me.
and in most cases those vst`s are sooo damn small,
and therefore sooo handy,
that it is the better choice in most cases.
my whole "big studio" fits to a handy mini-dvd,
that`s all i ever dreamed of.

Some freeware sould be marketable
some commercialized soft sould be freeware
Sometime it's better to be the best in the countryside than being the worst in the city...
The world is so complex nowadays !
Some freetoys/tools ,however,are indispensable

well the beatles thing isn't 100% relevant here i think. and a big part of their success was themselves, their voices and personalities. i think if youv'e got a great song, great personality and great vocals you could have the music played by on any old freeware stuff and with the right budget and marketing ,all the kids would love it..

The host/multiitrack and/or perhaps a sampler is the only place where you need to spend some (not much) money. But with affordable stuff like eXT that AFAIK also comes with a decent sampler itself (and for library playback sfz and some decent soundfonts are better than what most people had 15 years ago or even less) that isn't much of an issue either.
Actually if you can handle trackers, Buzz and Renoise will get you that for free as well (well you don't get ASIO and rendering in Renoise, but you can always record live in, say, Audacity).
So theoretically it's more than possible.
Still, there is a question of workflow, personal standards of useability and to some extent, sound quality, and as with all personal choices, it's down to you whether you'll find the available free tools good enough for YOUR needs and habbits.

Obviously a computer still can’t throw a television out of a hotel window or get drunk and be sick on the carpet, so there is little danger of them replacing drummers for some while yet. -- Nick Mason
