thanks bmanic! i really appreciate your effort to help out here.

perhaps this gets us closer to why i'm so confused.

I have for a long time understood about self-oscillation in filters. I own a number of hardware filters, most of which will self-oscillate. The ones that accept midi to set the cutoff sometimes make a nice OSC source in my modular setup.

Anyway, you've confirmed that this plugin doesn't self-oscillate. I haven't tried the demo, however I assumed from the description that it would not self-oscillate.

However I suspect that you and I must be mistaken here. I haven't tried the demo, so I'm somewhat 'off the hook' in my error, however I'll suggest that you must have missed something very important and fundamental in this plugin, if you cannot find how self-oscillation is used. I have it on a high authority that it is a big part of what's attractive in this plugin. oh yes. i'm just waiting to find out the 'hows and whys'. As I suspect you must be as well by this point!

Again thanks. It seems we need a more experienced voice in this discussion to help clear the waters.

Hopefully it is more apparent why I am confused by this whole matter now!

Post

why would you need to "clear waters" here? just listen to the filter and see if you like it or not.

This is totally unexpected isn't it ? I mean the Gate is still not released ... I've just demoed it...

I doubt they will get even 1 sale on this one ... 200 $ for a medicore sounding filter that doesn't even give you fine tuning on the resonance ? .. OUCH ! It sounded extremely harsh to me, not analogue at all ..

No ofeense to any Sonalksis fans, but this really has lowered their standards significiantly ..especially when the Kjaerhus Classic Filter sounds better (no aliasing), has way more control and is free ...

This is definitely an interesting avenue to go down for Sonalksis, pretty dissapointing to be totally honest.

Just my 2 cents

Meanwhile, I'd rather spend my cash on the new Kjaerhus synth ! (drools)

Cheers
Fots

P.S.: The classic filter by Kjaerhus does self oscillate but be sure to place a limiter after it :D lol

I guess this filter has its uses, but is it worth the money??? I have to test it extensively before jumping to any conclusions...

Post

am the only person who bought this and likes it?
what, did i just get conned or something?

i actually LIKE it, i think it sounds very very smooth.
fabfilter volcano was smooth too.

i dunno, i actually like how simple this sonalksis filter is...
if i want craziness, i already have nitro...

I actually kinda liked it too, but it sure isn't much when compared to Volcano, Filterscape or Frantic; all costing $70 less.

I was hoping for a filter plug from Sonalksis becuase I like the sound of the sv-517. However, this filter is disappointing. You can get better results by automating the sv-517 IMO.
It sounds good for what it is, but kinda odd decision on their part to price this at $200. Needs to have more control over parameters, and even then it's only worth half of what they are asking.

Post

@cl516: no you didn't get conned. If you like it and end up using it, it's money well spent. However, bduff pretty much summed it up why I think sonalksis released a turkey.

Cheers!

why will it be popular?
Sonalksis are a smart bunch of ppl ;)

It has one big shiny, easy to use knob!

this one creams l33t to the warez kidz..."omg, I got teh filtorz crax for 200 bux! d00ds!"

i dont get the concept behind this like some others it seems. i cant really see whether its meant for creative application or some functional use? as having no modulation options and predetermined reso levels just seems plain odd.

i havent tried it yet though so ill save further critique, but it better be good at that price.

currently fabfilter is the king for me. the sound is awesome and it has the flexibility to be useful in most situations.

yeah i tried the demo and know if i like it or not.

and i think the waters have been cleared - mr. '12 years in the business' is making up stories and has no idea what he's talking about, and has no willingness to even try to look like less than a total moron troll here.

there, case closed! 8)

Strangest product made by a well known company in quite some time. Don't want it, not as freeware. Like the knob though. :hihi:

I actually like this one. I like the fact that it takes no time to use, the cpu usages is very low, and the sound of it is pretty good.

I'm a huge fan of Fabfilter Volcano, and also the Ohmies QuadFrohmage, both of which I use alot, but I like the fact that this one is quick and useful - you can do some quick filtering without much thought and it still sounds better to me than many other small filter effects.

But in the longrun it's overpriced when you compare it with something like Fabfilter Volcano or something else like it that does a lot more for a better cost.

I think Sonalksis are aiming for people who want to do the least possible amount of work when applying filtering (except once in a while tweak that one big cool shiny knob ;) ), and I think they'll get a few people who really have been looking for something like that.
