Hi all....
I know this is not strictly anything to do with making music, but I am busy backing up some very old 33's from the 50's and 60's and they are a little worse for wear. Does anyone have or know of any good vinyl restoration software to deal with scratches and unwanted noise etc ..??? (freeware would be very nice!!...)
thanks

I'd also be interested in that. I sample a lot from old vinyl and some of the noise and scratches on the more beat up records is a tad excessive. I've used some freeware tools like Audacity for noise removal but with less than spectacular results. Actually, with absolutley terrible results...

I've been real happy with Adobe Audition 1.5's cleanup abilities.

With my soundcard "Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96" came a cleaning software called "Sound Laundry". It is made by Algorthmix. Here is a link : http://www.algorithmix.com/home/index_terratec.htm
It works very well !!! And if I´m right, it costs only $14,95, or try the demo.
Cheers.

Have a look at this.

I have been told that it is very good but it's not free = £29.
There is a demo but I don't know what the limitations are.
Forgot: If you fancy Linux then there is a good free one "Gnome Wave Cleaner."

i haven't yet seen any solution besides manually removing clicks that didn't touch the music as well. clean your records with a wet microfibric cloth or wash them to get rid of the worst dust particles, also clean your needle. the result will most probably be much better than any postrecording noise removal fx.

Ronny Pries made a good point there ! A friend of mine who´s only working with vinyl says the same thing. Anyway my Sound Laundry does it´s job perfectly.

...
you'll need both
pre-cleaning
- microfiberclot, alcoholdestilledwatermix, perhaps cleaningmachine ...
- wet-playing with special wetbrushes for vinyl
post-cleaning
- magixcleaninglab (best value for money)
plus alot of experience ...

I just did well over a thousand LP to CD conversions.. Well ok....it took me 3 years. I started with Soundforge then I tried everything I could find and in the end I was still using Soundforge. Audition/cooledit is very good too but SF is better for the way I work.
o Clean the vinyl.
o Clean the vinyl.
o Clean the vinyl.
o Record 1st album side. (Don't Stop!!)
o Flip and record 2nd side.
o Insert start & end markers while cleaning the area between tracks (+ -) a little and any huge clicks or pops but only the area affected.
90% of all clicks and pops are between tracks because that's where you place the stylus. I try not to touch the track proper if I can avoid it. That's why one of the generic tools won't work for me.
o Convert markers to regons, delete any empty regons and batch write to disk.
I convert entire sides of live albums as 1 rack/mp3. I can still grab a few songs later if I want.
o Burn tracks to CD.
If I'm converting to CD I still convert to mp3 while I'm at it because it's easier to get the file names.
o You can use SF to save as or convert waves to mp3s but I use Musicmatch Jukebox to do batch conversions and freeDB lookup.
o The best mp3 file utility / lookup tool is hands down Tag&Rename.
Regards and good luck.

I have Acoustica, Magix Cleaning Lab and Steinberg Clean 5.0 and believe me, Steinberg Clean is the best of them all for this job (and about the cheapest too). Acoustica is great for general audio editing and I thought Magix was fine until I got a free copy of Clean bundled with my Pioneer CDJ800 - and Clean blows Magix out of the water for recording, restoring and remastering vinyl, seriously.

some very important cd lifetime remarks:
1. recommended burning speed for audio is 4x (max 8x) !
2. don't trust the 100 year lifetime guarantee
of cdrom producer. there are some user outthere
who encounter file errors with nero cdcheck
after a few months.
3. NO writing on the cdrom-data-sector (both sides!)
with socalled cdrom-line-writers !
only on the inner transparent ring around the hole.
many writers destroy the data surface sooner or later.
4. NO etiquettes on the cdrom !
the adhesive destroys the data.
5. ONLY vertical, lightprotected storage !
6. regular checkup of the data structure
with NERO's cdcheck programm (min per year)
7. second copy of the cdrom on different place.
"a backup is something you never need -
until you don't have it"
