Piano patches for Rhino?

Does anyone out there have a really good straight piano patch for Rhino? I've managed to make a few patches from scratch that sound halfway decent in the upper range, but get really mushy in the lower. I.e., an octave below middle C they all start getting mushy and get worse as you get lower. Here is an example of one of my patches, exported from Rhino. Just save the text file and "import":

Thanks for any advice on improving the lower range to make it more "crisp".

In order to emulate a piano in the lower register, you need to apply an HP filter. Real pianos do not have much of a bottom end; it is the harmonics of the low strings we are accustomed to hearing.

That said, if you want piano you would be far better off using rhino as a sampler. Find a good freebie sound font, convert it to SFZ format using extreme sample converter or equivalent. Then, manually convert the SFZ text file to Rhino text file format. Unfortunitely 1) Rhino does not read SFZ directly 2) if the samples have their "loop end" points other than at the exact the end of the sample, you are out of luck; I really wish Big Tick would fix this issue.

You can always trim the end part of the sample in an editor...

Yes, you can. But thats not a very efficient way to get the soundfont material into rhino, is it? From both a time and hardrive storage point of view.

I think it would add a lot of value if Rhino could read a subset of the SFZ standard directly; including the "loop-end" value. Short of that, perhaps a small utility program to make the conversion.

Well... that's because you want to use Rhino for what it's not... it's not a sampler... actually, if you have the soundfont or sfz file to start with, why not use sfz to play it ?
This said, it's a nice suggestion... I'll keep that in mind :)

Thanks for the tips, re HP filter. I'll give that a go, I guess. As for the loop-end... I discussed that issue with 'Tick long ago. I'm still hoping that one will be someday fixed, but as he says: Rhino isn't a sampler.

The reason I don't use another synth or a piano module is that I want the microtuning capability of Rhino! What I'm after with this exercise is a microtunable piano-like sound that is crisper in the low register.

The freeware SFZ merely plays the soundfont; Rhino goes far beyond this, allowing all sorts of re-synthesis possibilities. The textual nature of the import is not the issue; its the need to destructively edit samples to form the loop end point.

BTW, no offense intended by any of my whining.

No problem pummel... actually the sample import feature could (and should) be clever enough to remove the end part of the sample... :)
