it's a hobby...

Post

a) because I have to;

b) because I enjoy it;

c) because it's my outlet for creativity, I'm not really good at other creative arts;

d) because I made a conscious decision a few years ago to not scatter my concentration and energy onto 100's of different hobbies, but to direct it towards music and music-related things.

I enjoy playing piano, the way I used to enjoy playing guitar. I can get tears in my eyes when I happen to play something really nice or difficult (for me that's e.g. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody), and playing that way is relaxing, fulfilling, and gives me energy.

Spin-offs are my efforts to compose music, to mix and master and use all the stuff that is at kvr. To the ultimate distraction of using stuff like synthmaker and graphical software to create my own VST's.

Like I wrote in another thread: running LL3 and playing improvised blues for half an hour or an hour... that's one of the great parts of being a musician. (except during office hours ;) ).

Post

...but WHY do I make music? I guess one simplistic reason is that it's nice when you see the reaction of other people to your music. This morning I was listening to some of my tunes on my car stereo to check out the mixing/mastering of them. I had them on loud enough that a guy who was walking alongside the car (we were in heavy traffic - that's Bristol for you!) was nodding in time and smiling. What a great feeling on a dreary Monday morning!

oh and it's either make music or talk to the missus...

Because creation is part of being human, as is the imagination that makes it possible.

Also, to make music that I've never heard before.

Sorry, we're not going to call ourselves 'soundicians' just because you're being pedantic.

keeps me from doing bad things...

At first I had no choice, just had to do music. This is still the case but it's happening less often.
Now I have no choice either because I make my living through it, hardly a chance of changing things. Which sometimes is good, sometimes it isn't.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Eh? I'm not suggesting that for a second -if you read my reply properly you'll see that I consider myself to be a musician, despite struggling with music since I totally failed to learn the recorder aged 7!

I just make music....what else is a musician?

Aha! Sorry - didn't spot any obvious trace of humour in your reply so failed to detect the "joke" factor. It just sounded rather condescending - I'm sure KVR Forum isn't as smug a club as it sometimes seems...

"soundician" isnt a real word. condescension doesnt normally work when you have to mangle the english language to try and do it... :shrug:

I'm a musician becuase I like writing and performing music.

The deeper answer is that music is, in some ways, the most immediate artistic media. A minor chord sounds, sad, whilst a major chord sounds happy. No other expressive medium plugs into the human emotional circuitry in such a direct way. I guess that's why I'm a musician rather than a writer or painter.
