Good one chief.
But if you want reliable quality, then you might have to go to a reliable vendor. But reliability is maybe worth paying for.
I can't agree. Quality is nor ever joined to money. There are just approaching tabs and there are very accurate tabs for free. If it was not this way there would be no vultures trying to make money of other's people work. If Jimi Hendrix, or Robert Fripp or whoever tells me or us they don´t want people figure out their songs, I would respect that (specially if it's Jimi :-o ). What pisses me off is a series of parasits trying to make money of something they just don't understand. Are they able to play a tab they think is illegal? Let me doubt.

Please read what I wrote.

There will always be online free lyrics and tabs, just as there are still free midis today.

Everybody's contending for a piece of the action - lawyers, artists, freeloaders, the musical population of Russia, everybody. This is how it is.

But if you want reliable quality, then you might have to go to a reliable vendor. But reliability is maybe worth paying for.

At the opposite end, anyone's welcome to use their own musical ear to work out a tab, or write down a lyric.

You're not trying to blow this out of proportion are you, chibs
I just don't think you're taking this seriously man. I mean, let me explain my thoughts on it.

It's not just about lyrics and tabs. It's about the freedom of information, and the ability to create for the purposes of enlightenment.

Look: I've rarely come across a bad tab that I couldn't piece together a guitar song. Sure, they're never - NEVER - spot on. But they're very rarely useless either. Tabs aren't the be all and end all, when you're learning a song from a tab, you're mostly using your ears to clarify the information you've got.

Lyrics... anyone can remember them. That's the point.

We're not allowed to write down and share what is in our own heads? C'mon man...

Surely you see the sheer tepidness of that?

It's not about wanting to screw "the man" out of his hard earned cash. It's not even about being allowed to expose our favourite artists, it's not even about getting instrumentally better ... it's about the establishment trying to disallow us to use our minds in whatever ways we see fit.

Have you read Eric Tamm's book on Fripp? Very good read so far! It's out of print, but you can get it from Eric Tamm's site completely free.

Wouldn't someone creating tabs or writing the lyrics to a song be an interpretation of that song and thus not an "infringement" of any kind ? Oh, and I am the rights holder to middle C. You're all doomed! bwah ha ha ha

UNLICENSED LYRIC, SHEET MUSIC & GUITAR TAB SITES:

A STATEMENT FROM THE BRITISH MPA

The MPA(US) is one of two US-based associations that represent American music publishers. The UK MPA represents British music publishers and operates on a completely independent and autonomous basis.

The UK MPA has no current plans to replicate the action announced last week by the American MPA, but will be watching developments with interest. The MPA’s music publisher members are committed to making their songwriters’ music and lyrics available on a licensed and legal basis to as wide an audience and user-base as possible, whatever the mode of delivery. They are also committed to ensuring that legitimate sites with accurate lyrics and guitar tabs are not undermined by unlicensed sites and those deriving commercial benefit from associated advertising in particular. Songwriters depend on royalties for their livelihoods. Music publishers work on behalf of writers and composers (or their heirs) to ensure that they are fairly compensated for the use of their copyrights, and that adaptations, arrangements or “approximations” of their works are not made without prior consent.

Subject: Song sites face legal crackdown

Hello,

This an email in reference to the news report at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4508158.stm

I find it outrageous that this approach to musical sharing is even being considered in this day and age! I will quote from the news reporting and the MPA website to make my argument.

"Guitar licks and song scores are widely available on the Internet but are "completely illegal", he told the BBC"

Does Lauren Keiser play the guitar? Does he have any concept of what it is to be a musician? Guitar licks are called "licks" because they are generic melodies or sequences that every guitar player under the sun is aware of. They form the musical "dictionary" that guitarists go by. Are you going to start burning dictionaries and chord charts next?

Twelve year old boys and girls who are learning how to play the guitar (and other instruments) are learning primarily from the Internet and their teacher, who also probably gets material for his students to play from the Internet I would imagine that the argument you would give is that "well they should pay to learn that instrument, they should pay for the learning materials." Well I ask, what about the destitute people who will, and have in the past, form a major part of the creative world?

So many guitarists from the past who form the fundamentals of rock and roll music were poor and had to fight to feed themselves and play their instrument – for the love of music. So many of the future guitar heroes are in the exact same position that the past heroes were in. My point being that they cannot afford to spend money on musical scores, and if they were forced to do so, music would suffer. You should be thinking of the free websites who offer musical scores and guitar licks as an investment in music, and an investment in your business interests. Because without those future musicians, your business would not exist.

Is that why so many bands and artists today are manufactured pap? Is it because you've cut off so many branches in an attempt to preserve ownership of music, that the tree cannot grow? I don't think companies like yourself understand the creative mind whatsoever. All you seem to want to do is hinder the progress of music, and it's always for monetary reasons. It's like this, the best composers and musicians do it for the love of the music, not for the money. You should be investing in those kinds of people, not in the kinds of people who value sports cars and sparkling clothes.

I realise it's all about profits for the recording industry. This "War on piracy" thing everyone has got going has got to stop, because it's strangling music. You're not preventing anything, all you are doing is making musicians angry – remember, the people downloading scores are MUSICIANS! They are your clientèle in a sense, so why are you not looking after them?

If you want to preserve the music industry, you need to preserve the rights of musicians and artists, not the rights of corporate entities. Copyright used to be about protecting the artist, not any longer however, since contracts are often designed to rip off the artist.

One one question.... are you going to start cracking down on buskers too, even the licence holding ones?

Food for thought, I hope.

Regards,

Andrew Vernon, student, composer, musician, artist.
