a visit to the pawnshop...

i didn't buy anything, but this stuff was there today (i was looking for a playstation 2 for the kids),

Korg EA-1 $89, Korg ES-1 $199, Gemini DJ mixer with FX $99 (i know very little about these but it looked ok, lots of channels and features), (2) Fostex 8-channel digital recorders $359 each and a Fostex digital master deck, not sure if i was a dat or disc recorder, they were in a rack and hard to look over...other decent looking stuff was an Epiphone lefthanded Paul, Ibanez bass, Pearl drum set, Kustom bass amp, Crate guitar amp, a few different mics, a Yamaha Minidisc 4 track and cassette 4 track, a few other odds and ends....

the point is, if you had about a grand you could practically outfit a whole band! it was hard not to put some cash on the Korgs (i have the ER-1, i love those little boxes, easy to use and fun as hell to jam with), but i don't need anymore stuff....

it's one of those pawnshops where lots of music gear goes thru for decent prices, heavy turnover... i got a Epiphone Sheraton 2 and a Rode mic there, they also have cheap computers there from time to time...it's a buyers market!

Standard pawn shop practice is to set the price at whatever the retail price would be for a new item. Enough people are sufficiently stupid that they sometimes sell it like this. The rest, realize that pawnshop owners are more than willing to haggle, trade, negotiate, or barter. Pawnbrokers who don't let you haggle a price, go hungry.

I remember trolling pawn shops around 1991 and even then being amazed at the amount of analog gear that was available for cheap. I once found a place that had a Korg VC-10 vocoder for $40 and a MS-20 right above it for $70. The kicker: I only had $30 to my name on that day.

The good news: Construction is almost done on my time machine.

i hope to find an Arp 2600 for $200 (or $50)like i the stories i've heard, but i think those days are long gone...but all the little digi boxes, they work good and they are out there, i've seen the Yamahas for $150ish...really hard not to get the Korgs, believe me....

(edit)shit....i think i'm talking myself into getting the EA-1, i've got a Roland MC-09 Phrase Lab which has a great sounding bass synth with a convicing 303 sound, but the sequencer on the Korg boxes are much easier to use on the fly for edits/pattern switching, etc...i really want the ES-1 as well, just can't see blowing the money....ahh, but the sampler, bass, and rhytym units locked up.....mix meisterness, no doubt...maybe i can sell some stuff? someone stop me!!!!!

dude, you're killing me with the MS-20 story, one of my favorite synths, great for running crappy drum boxes thru and super cool unusual filters (didn't someone mention they were getting an MS20 filter for a Doepfer? that's what i should be saving money for!)

The Korgs are GREAT fun, I'd say get one if even just for passing external audio thru. I love the delay fx on these boxes!

I still think $360 for a digi 8 track is crazy money (small outlay for what you get).. I spent 5 times that for my 18 track Roland...

Even the most ignorant pawnbroker knows to google for stuff. It would be pretty hard to mistake an ARP 2600 for some useless obsolete piece of test equipment or whatever. How could you fail to discover that, not only is it highly sought after, only 3000 were ever made, but the street price is $2500!!

Anyway you probably will find one now that I said it.

What was the original price on a 2600 anyway?


I personally would probably let it pass by unless I was sure I could flip it for a profit. Last thing I want is another temperamental, space consuming, heat generating, power sucking, high maintenance piece of gear getting in the way of playing music. But then, for $200, or probably even $1000, I'd snatch it just to sell it to you for $2500, whereupon you would inform me that I'd been ripped off, nobody pays that much for these things, etc.
